The Mets Are Winners

Since July 29, 1967, the Mets' regular-season record is 3,286-3,285, or as long as you can go back and say they are, statistically, winners. I was thinking about this in terms of 2009 and how, if we win 82 games this year (assuming a 162-game season), we will have as many winning seasons as losing seasons for the first time in team history: 24-24.

I love it , how do you ever think this stuff up.

We're a winner! From July 29, 1967 to September 28, 2008 we are! Other franchises may define their success by championships or whatever, but that's too much forest and not enough trees, especially after your first several seasons were comprised of acorns falling on your head.

Cool, you can keep tracking this backwards, also. With each win, you can say, "That makes us winners going back to July 24, 1967. That one takes us back to June 19th."

They may never make it back to April 1962 as winners, but it gives me something to shoot for on this earth.

Good news (except for fans of accuracy on the first try): The Mets have been winners even longer than reported. Thanks to a FAFIF reader's intrepid eye, I was compelled to check back a little further and thus discovered the Mets' winning ways can be traced all the way to June 13, 1967, the second game of a twinight doubleheader against the Reds at Shea (won by that Seaver kid). Starting with that date, the Mets were 22-22 through July 28, meaning the current hot streak can be said to encompass a span of 6,615 games: a cool 3,308-3,307.
