I phrased the Subject in the singular as I don't expect anybody else to have a memory of Mike Carp...

Last August, my son Dylan and I went to Bowie to see the Binghamton Mets play the Baysox. We had seats in the 2d row above the B-Mets dugout. Carp was the starting 1B and would always have a baseball in hand, both going to and leaving the dugout.

After one inning, Carp left the dugout and rolled a ball to a young girl (about 10) in the first row. She was sitting with her parents and brother and I noticed that he noticed her brother. When he left the dugout the next inning, he immediately turned toward this family but they were leaving to get food. He called out, waited, and then tossed a ball to the boy. I thought that was very nice of him, not wanting to give a gift to one and not the other.

Later, he tossed a ball to another child in the row. When he homered, he got plenty of cheers from his new fans.

I think he got on the bad side of the org when he showed up to spring training fat a few years ago. I envision him as a future legend of Japan League. With a name like Carp he can't miss.

I saw him play in a DH in New Britain. He just didn't strike me as being that impressive... The thing that did strike me was his resemblance to Larry Bird.

I seem to remember people calling for him to replace Delgado RIGHT NOW back in May.

When we saw him with the B-Mets this year we decided that Carp was our other faux son, since his birth date fit in nicely between Joe Smith and our daughter.

It's a good trade, but I'm sorry to see Carp go.

Gone before I got to really know him. Such is life in MLB.
