Guest AG/DC Guests Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Longest hit streak from the start of a career by a Met?I thought it would be Jefferies 1988, but then I forgot he did some pinch-hitting in 1987.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 I believe that was Mitch Kumstein back in 76.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 I'm looking now. The highest I've found so far is Mike Cameron with 7. Doing a more thorough search...
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Well, I'm thinking the actual start of a career, although the start of a Met career is compelling also.I realize now that Murphy is ineligible, as he had a pinch-walk in the only plate appearance of his second game.
Guest Kong76 Guests Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Mike Vail got a hit in all but 5 of his 38 or so games in 1975.Doesn't answer the question but I felt like telling someone since I counted it all up.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 There are three players who started their Mets career with hitting streaks of ten or more games: Johnny Lewis (11), Rick Cerone (10) and Robin Ventura (10).For start of a career (no previous service with any other team) it looks like Keith Miller with 7, followed by Dave Schneck with 6.Jeff Gardner had 5 and Ron Hodges, Bobby Pfeil, and Benny Ayala had 4.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Wondermints. I remember Miller starting his career batting .375 or so.All that's left then is to see who has the on-base record that Murphy is stomping all over.

Guest AG/DC Guests Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Hit streaks end if you walk your way through a game, to my understanding. Unfair but there it is.

RealityChuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 ="AG/DC"]Hit streaks end if you walk your way through a game, to my understanding. Unfair but there it is.Not so. According to the MLB Site:="MLB"]Consecutive-Game Hitting Streaks: A consecutive-game hitting streak shall not be terminated if all the player's plate appearances (one or more) results in a base on balls, hit batsman, defensive interference or a sacrifice bunt. The streak shall terminate if the player has a sacrifice fly and no hit. The player's individual consecutive-game hitting streak shall be determined by the consecutive games in which the player appears and is not determined by his club's games. (bolding added)
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 That's great (for Murphy)! Wikipedia says otherwise, but there's enough ambiguity between the second and third sentence that I should've guessed they got it wrong.I'll fix it later.
