Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 GCL Mets no-hit Cardinals for 14, lose in 17Seven pitchers hold hosts hitless, but squibber ends up beating eighth hurlerBy Zack Hample / Special to MLB.comStarter Scott Moviel fanned three Cardinals and walked three in his three frames. (Jerry Hale/MLB.com)It was goose egg night at Roger Dean Stadium. The Gulf Coast League Mets no-hit the Eastern Division rival Cardinals for 14 innings before falling, 1-0, in the bottom of the 17th on Thursday."I've played in long games and I've played in no-hitters, but never a no-hitter that lasted so long," said Mets coach Bobby Floyd, who broke into professional baseball in 1964.The Mets (7-11) used eight pitchers in the four-hour, 47-minute game which began July 7. Scott Moviel and Raul Batis each struck out three batters in three innings. Nathan Hedrick, Wendy Rosa, Luis Rojas and Ricky Sparks worked an inning apiece. Maikel Cleto then hurled two hitless frames before rain suspended play in the top of the 13th."Everybody was aware of it," said Floyd, "especially having that three- or four-day break in between."When play resumed, the well-rested Cleto pitched two more hitless innings before giving up a leadoff single to Guillermo Toribio in the bottom of the 15th.Cleto walked the next batter before retiring the next three. He finished his six-inning performance by surrendering another hit in a scoreless 16th.Santiago Valdez (0-3) took over in the 17th and retired two batters before yielding the game-winning single to Hector Alvarez."All of our pitchers threw well," Floyd said. "I think [the Cardinals] only hit one ball hard for a base hit. Even the last ball that drove in the winning run was a little squibber toward third base."The Cardinals (6-11) were also on top of their game, no-hitting the Mets through five innings en route to a six-hit masterpiece."It became a real battle," Floyd said. "It was just enjoyable to see the intensity level pick up."Matt Spade (2-0) picked up the win after limiting the Mets to two hits over the final three innings. Starter Carlos Gonzalez struck out five batters in four perfect frames to lower his ERA to 1.15Guillermo Toribio scored the winning run after drawing his third walk.
