Lobbying for deals

From the Game Notes:

Added support?
Randolph said he has no plans to ask Minaya to make a particular move because such matters are not in the jurisdiction of the manager. And every indication is that the Mets will make no move for a run producer, but will try to reinforce the bullpen. Minaya said Saturday he doesn't intend to seek a replacement for disabled second baseman Jose Valentin.

But after the game Saturday -- a loss that turned, to some degree, on the inability of second baseman Ruben Gotay to turn a double play -- a veteran player said, "I'm sure they were saying, 'We'll be OK at second base, we'll be all right.' But then they were saying, 'Ya know, maybe we should take a look.' "

I strongly dislike when players in a pennant drive start lobbying management to improve the team through trades. This is a subtle form of that, but it also undercuts the confidence of a young player batting .336 after 114 trips to the plate.

The fiunny thing is that we got yesterday's win in part because of Jeff Kent's inabiity to turn a double play, bailing just a little bit as Beltran came in hard but clean, and David Wright beat it down the first base line.

I agree that players shouldn't ever lobby management for trades but nothing I've seen of Gotay makes me think he can cover the position defensively.

Do you think he can cover it with his bat for seven innings and then turn things over to Anderrson Hernandez? Do you think Easley can cover it?

Just as trades are not in the jurisdiction of the manager, to use WWSB's phrase, nor ar they in the jurisdiction of the players. It's one thing to say " I am sure management will get us the parts we need to win bbbyyy", but to say "I hope management gets us a 2B who can help us win" is bad form.

Possibly. I think Gotay against righties with Hernandez for late inning defense and Easley against lefties might work.
