I just got this link in an e-mail. Took a quick look, but don't have time to digest it right now:

too much math....

it seems like if we finish the rest of the season going 500, the mets have a 84% chance of making the playoffs. if they go 40-44 the rest of the way, it'll be a 49% chance they miss the playoffs (virtually 50-50% chance).

so, go better than 40-44, and they have better than a 50% chance of making the playoffs.
