Guest Mark Healey Guests Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 If Edgy and the rest of you don't object, I'd like to try this as a way to share GBM stories. To start:http://www.gothambaseball.com/news/1176131836.phphttp://www.gothambaseball.com/news/1175832345.phpAs always your comments are always appreciated (even if it doesn't seem that way) :-)
Guest Mark Healey Guests Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Al Cohn wants to know where the hell Endy Chavez is...http://www.gothambaseball.com/news/1176302063.phpand he loves feedback, for better or worse.here's another interesting (to me, anyway) debate topic...is the RBI overrated?http://www.gothambaseball.com/news/1176298468.php
Guest cooby Guests Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 I have a feeling Endy will get his ABs.

Guest Mark Healey Guests Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 http://www.gothambaseball.com/news/1176383188.phpHoward Megdal looks at the Mets and Yankees' pitchers
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Endy is fine in his role: He & Castro are about the only guy on the bench to be an advantage anymore. Newhan's got zero talent and desn't scare anyone, Easley looks like he'll be used as a straight platoonie, Franco's alright if and only if you need a single. Of course the RBI is overrated.I don't think the Mets or Yannx necessarily set out specifically to create staffs that look like they do this year: That's just how they turned out. That said I wouldn't trade our starting 5 for theirs.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Who would you sit right now so Chavez can play more?,not to blow a hole in Cohen's theory that the Mets were a different team with Reyes and Chavez hitting 1-2 but Endy hit second in 20 games with 20 hits,he hit seventh, eight and ninth 20 times or more, eight 45 times and ninth 31 times.I think Mr.Cohen is being a bit nostalgic when talking about Endy.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Endy will get his opportunity. As will Park. Let's not force the issue.
Guest Mark Healey Guests Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 I agree that Endy will be asked to play more often as the season progresses, but I also think that there may have been some places where he could have played. Not a biggie, but Al's a big Endy guy. :-)I guess I'm from the Bobby V school of keeping everyone fresh...this is a different team of course, so I get why Willie does things differently
Guest Mark Healey Guests Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 A couple of new talking points:(another piecce from AL): Al Wants Small Ballhttp://www.gothambaseball.com/news/1176473662.phpMegdal at Shea:(he was on assignment for us at Shea last night) http://www.gothambaseball.com/news/1176473215.phpNats-Mets Series Preview (one of the new guys, getting his feet wet)http://www.gothambaseball.com/news/1176472639.phpAs always, your feedback, readership and hospitatlity is always appreciated.MH
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 I believe generally, small ball is a self-fulfilling, self-defeating prophecy. Teams that cannot score big tend to use it, and using it tends to prevent them from scoring big, which encourages its use... etc etc etc. The Mets IMO did way too much of this in 2005, not to mention for the first 22 years of the organization. Davey Johnson had the right idea about offense.Howard is a good writer.
Guest Mark Healey Guests Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 Feedback is good, Rudeness, not so muchhttp://www.gothambaseball.com/news/1176725270.php Al's all for debate, just not the nastiness...
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 ]...In sum, I believe Willie Randolph helped convert him from a journeyman to a star last year...the word "star" does not in any way apply to endy chavez.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 Nymr, always with the absolutes. Here's one for you, Heals. I registered for your forum to post it there, but I've been waiting an hour for my confirmation.Dear Gotham Baseball,I appreciated reading Patrick Andriola's recent story on the Mets 1999 infield ("The Cheap Seats: The Perfect Storm of Infielders," 4/5/2007). A few minor points are worth noting however.John Olerud did not come to the Mets as a free agent, but was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1996-1997 offseason in a trade for Robert Person. The author seems to be saying in the seventh paragraph that Edgardo Alfonzo had never been a secondbaseman before. In fact, he came up as middle infielder, having been a shortstop in the minors before switching to second when Rey Ordoñez was acquired, but second, too, was oocupied when he arrived at Shea. He still played 98 games at second --- including the majority (66) of his 1996 appearances --- during his initial tenure as a utility man, before switching to third only when he became a full-timer. He was well experienced. Andriola may be meaning to imply that it was Edgardo's first year as a full-time secondbaseman, which he writes more clearly in the fifth paragraph. But Fonzie certainly had plenty of experience prior to the move. It's confusing to the reader who might be unfamiliar. Most importantly, Andriola seems to be missing the point of the Sports Illustrated article he uses as a jumping-off point, and this becomes clear by the penultimate paragraph. In describing them as possibly the "best infield ever," the article's author was judging them for their defensive performance, not for their overall play. Thanks again for the recollections of these fine infielders in a wonderful season.Sincerely,Edgy DC
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Edgy will use any excuse to get the word 'penultimate' into print.

Guest Mark Healey Guests Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 Why is Reyes never thought of as a possible captain?http://www.gothambaseball.com/news/1177256305.php I've been working on a lot of different projects for GBM this past few months, so it's pretty great to get GN back off the inactive list. As always, feedback is appreciated.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 More seriously, I'm not sure that I agree with, "Since he came though the system, David Wright has been heralded as the future captain of the Mets."But if that's true, its' people getting way ahead of themselves with WRight, not being behind on Reyes.

Guest sharpie Guests Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 ]Asked if the Mets were planning to have a Japanese restaurant in Citifield, Perez said, “I don’t know. But I sure hope so.”Why would anyone expect Oliver Perez to know what restaurant plans there are for Citifield?
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Maybe they thought it was Timo Perez,he speaks japanese...
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 They should have asked him if there was going to be a gruel restaurant.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 Not a bad article from Andriola on D Wright,I think most Mets know that Wright is still getting on base,it's just that he's been terrible everywhere else, hitting with RISP he has been especially brutal.
