]It was fantastic to be able to actually watch the Mets and Pedro here in Central CT. During BBTN after the Mets game they had a stat that this was the earliest point that any team ever had a 5 game lead in the history of baseball. That�s pretty amazing considering the �98 Yankees, the 162-0 Mariners, and the 35-5 Tigers of �84. Of course Steve Philips was there to crap all over it for all the Mets fans in the audience by revealing that the Mets will be in trouble if Pedro goes down with an injury. That�s insightful analysis Mets fans have probably not heard before.

I find it interesting to see what other teams fans are saying about the Mets, whether it's at a bar or on the interweb.

What it looks like is that a bunch of SoSHers each grabbed or were assigned a team at the beginning of the year and are responisble for following them throughout the season. We did something like that here a few years back although we didn't make it a year-long project. Instead, we were just trying to mock the rather generic pre-season previews that were on some site (ESPN.com I believe) and tried (or in many cases [u:b7520c79b8]pretended[/u:b7520c79b8]) to make the case for said team winning all the marbles that year.
So it's quite likely that the 'Best Team in Baseball' heading has been hanging on that thread long before it was even arguably true. I had the Angels in '02 which made my pre-season post look particularly prescient when it was, in fact, mostly optimistic bullshit.


Maybe this is something we should consider for next year?
Each person grabs a team or two and then gives periodic updates on that team's season, trades, call-ups, etc. You would also do that team as a KTE if/when we played them since you'd be up to speed and wouldn't need additional research.

btw, if 3rd party validation is what you seek just listen to virtually anyone on the topic.
I don't think I've heard a national analyst over the last week or so: Gammons, Stark, Kirkjian, as well as scouts/GMs they've quoted, who have referred to the Mets as anything other than the best team in baseball.

The key word is that each person chooses to be a part of this project. I'd opt out - as it is, I'd prefer not to be in the KTE pool (I'll do the Pirates this year, as assigned, but frankly it's a project where the angst outweighs any enjoyment that I get out of it).

I agree with SK, I'd probably be into it for like the first month and then get bored with it.

I'd only be into it all season if there was another team I really liked, which I think is the case with this guy and the Mets.

OK - I'll keep that in mind for future years. I'll keep this year's assignment, though - I've been getting to know the Pirates over the past couple of weeks.

I think it seems to be working. Those who enjoy the KTE assignment accept it, those who don't decline, as I did back at the beginning of the thread. We seem to have enough people who enjoy it, so the tradition will remain alive.

]Steve Phillips on ESPN Radio this morning said that, when Omar was his assistant, he'd say all the time "Steve, prospects will get you fired." Meaning if you waited for them to reach their potential you'd lose so much in the meantime that you wouldn't be around as GM to see it. Phillips thought Omar would definitely go for the deal, but thought Beane would look to involve other teams to drive the price even higher than Milledge - specifically, the teams that don't get Clemens.
