I think it should. It wouldn't be fair to him if it didn't. What happens if someone caps the season on a 55-game streak and it wouldn't be allowed to carry over?

i think it is fair. he shouldn't lose his streak just because the season ended on him. if anything it makes it more difficult on him to continue the streak after months off, he could have been in a real groove last september that won't carry over.

What's the difference? It's a hitting streak, not first place.

Nobody's career stats get wiped at the start of a season.

They actually keep separate records for this sort of stuff: one for single-season streaks and another for streaks over 2 seasons. So even if J-Roll goes onto 57 and beyond, JoeD will still be in the record books.

Plus I think it does make a difference. Streak records are kind of flukey anyway but what makes them impressive in the everyday-ness of them and there's a difference when a 6 month break is thrown in the middle of it.
I think there's a bigger diff here than in the so-called "Tiger Slam" where Tiger was the reigning champion of all 4 golfing majors at the same time - but didn't win them all in the same year; he won the final 3 one season and then the 1st one (Masters) the following Spring. Most golfers are adamant that that's not the same thing as 4 in the same year although I think it's at least close. There are weeks and months between majors anyway so the off-season break is less of a factor. In baseball, however, it's very different.

Sometimes the rules change on you. Like all the time.

This change is hard for people to accept. If Bonds breaks Aaron's record, is he the new HR champ? Or is he only the HR champ of the steroids period? There's an enlightening discussion somewhere in there.

If Rolllins breaks Jody's record over two seasons, who holds the longest consecutive game hitting streak? That becomes a judgment call.

If someone then comes along and break Rollins' record over two seasons, but has a post-season in between that snaps the streak, does that really break Rollins' record?

If a pitcher throws back-to-back no hitters in consecutive starts, but in between has a relief appearance in which he gives up a hit, does that tie Vander meer or not? Your call?

Wasn't life simpler in the good old days?
