MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 I just happened to check out his playing career today. He was a reserve outfielder for the White Sox during his playing days. His "most like" players include Brad Komminsk and ex-Met Al Luplow.I was wondering, it seems that bench players (mainly catchers and infielders) have had success as managers. The stars who tried it mostly failed. Maybe that's because they have a lot of time to watch the game and discuss/ study it from the bench. But is anyone aware of any major league outfielders who have gone on to a career as a (successful) General Manager? The only other one I can think of is Frank Robinson. Later
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 ML OFers as GMs (off the top of my head):PiniellaBeaneWatson (part-time OFer)One of the problem with Outfielders has been, that by not being part of the strategy sessions and mound conferences, they rarely get to demonstrate their "brains & leadership" qualities and therefore have rarely been put on the fast-track to post-playing career jobs. It's long been cited as one of the reasons (excuses) why black players - who were almost exclusively OFers in their first generation of playing - were so slow in breaking into Mgr/GM ranks.
