he did it again.

Yes - I caught that. He also flat out said that he's not a fan of the WBC and he feels it messes up the spring training evaluation process.

The Spanish language broadcast in the background is almost as loud as Keith and Gary's English commentary. They need to fix that.

I'm liking it. I just hope they stay fair, unlike a certain other TV network..

Huh. I bet Keith hasn't watched a single game. Probably too busy dyeing his hair.

In response to Rotblatt, Keith just said, "I haven't watched one inning. I have no interest."

"He also flat out said that he's not a fan of the WBC and he feels it messes up the spring training evaluation process."

This coming from a guy who once said (wrote actually) that spring training is nothing more than 9-5 tedium (for established vets anyway).

I personally like it when tedium is interrupted.

The banter between gary & Keith revealed that Keith's real issue had nothing to do with spring training but the fact that the WBC or (BS as he called it... twice!) was that it interfered with his idea of what was "important."

Gary asked him if they should do it in November?... "You'd have to play in domes or warm-weather cities..."

During an extended ASB? "It's already too hard to get back into your groove after a 3-day break..."

and of course his issue with Spring Training.

To be honest I had some initial issues reconciling the "importance," of this too, and that's one of the things that makes it difficult for me to follow Soccer: Is league play important? Or is it the club tournments? Or World play? But I think this has shown that a few weeks every few years won't kill anyone, and dare I say, even though I'm sure this is first a money grab by Selig, it's also a good idea.

Shirley, in our lifetimes we'll be looking at some kind of official agreement (minor leagueish or otherwise) between MLB and leagues in Japan and Korea etc., heading toward at point at which MLB expansion is truly international (NL, AL, JL, etc)

I think Keith finally caved on November being a good idea --- or the best of the bad ones. Hey Keith, they don't necessarily need domes when most of the baseball world is in warm-weather countries. Do we get to always host this thing by default?

He's spoken and written in the past about spring trainiing being at least three weeks too long but they extend it so the owners can make more money. Sometimes he's just a misanthropic. It's part of what makes him fun and honest but doesn't always make him correct.

The problem with November is a lotta guys will be gassed from the long season, and many others would have immediate & justifiable economic incentives not to play, seeing as an injury might interfere with their ability to negotiate their next contract.

Well, yeah, any pitcher who threw 200+ innings and had a post-season is going to be seriously discrouraged from participating. Although everybody should be sharp and playing at their best.

I hadn't thought of the guys without contracts. They seettle these things in World Cup Soccer though. Maybe the WBC organizers can all the free agents an insurance policy.

You could still put together a pretty good tournament if you leave off free agents and guys who are tired from the post-season. In any given year, the majority of players don't fall into those categories.

Watching "Mets Weekly" starring Julie Donaldson's Tight Shirt. Yeow.

Have to say, an improvement over Fran's interviews.

And look -- Greg of FaFiF!!!!!

I was fantasizing about Julie Donaldson and may have missed if they quoted him.

I can't compete with Julie Donaldson's tight shirt. Though I have to confess I've yet to see Julie Donaldson, her tight shirt, Mets Weekly, myself or anything on SNY. But you didn't miss any words of wisdom. I've already been alerted by the producers that I'm seen but not heard in this edition. A more thorough Bloggers Roundtable will be presented in two and three weeks, respectively and, theoretically, I'll be heard and seen in some depth along with three fellow blog travelers. (We taped with Siafa Lewis for like two hours which led me to expect they'll use about eight seconds.)

Still, I doubt I'll be a match for the aforementioned Ms. Donaldson if JD's scouting report is accurate.

They panned right past you so as to catch a comment from Young Hippie Met Geek. They also showed MetsBlog Guy yammering away while Bearded Met Blogger Guy just sat there in the foreground.

It was during a segment on new additions to the team where they basically intended to insinuate that all bloggers were 110% behind every move Omar made this offseason, so perhaps best they didn't include any comments from you.

Looks like they also used a snippet of the back of your head and a computer screen to "tease" the upcoming feature "Inside the Minds of Met Bloggers" (well, behind the minds of Met Bloggers, actually).

It must be cool to be a Coming Attraction.

I'm put in mind of a radio station billboard that loomed over I-275 in Tampa when I was in college: "John Landis's back." And of course it was a picture of the disc jockey's back.

I actually thought it quite clever nearly 25 years ago.

If you're scoring at home, the hippie blogger is one of the Mets Geeks. The bearded blogger is this board's cousin, the Eddie Kranepool Society. There was actually a fifth blogger on hand (sounds like a JFK assassination theory) in case any of us collapsed from the warmth of the close quarters but he never got in the game. (They cast a net -- or Net -- and got one more blogger than needed and he was the odd blogger out that particular taping.)

Good group on both sides of the camera. Delighted to say the people putting the show together are actually Mets fans. All in all, the greatest collection of Mets minds in one room since Scarlet Knight's kid dined alone.

This'll cause some ripples through the blogosphere. MetsGeek gave the death penalty to Fire Willie, their biggest headache of a poster, a week or two ago. This is bound to lead to open specumalation that they did it because they're in bed with the bosses.

Good for you, Greg. Jace get aced out?

Posted

Such intrigue! Nah, Fire Willie was apparently teetering on the edge of extinction before all this came up, or so I learned that afternoon. Can't say I'm all that familiar with the case.

Jace and I would've both shown up 'cept he was out of town when they taped. (Perhaps one of us would have wound up joining the unfortunate excess blogger who watched the proceedings from out of camera range; he was a sport.) If they continue to have these things and we're invited back, I'm sure we'll each find a way to participate.

Yeah, I'm not saying there was anything to Fire Willie's banishment except that he got what was coming to him, only that peeps will speculate otherwise.

I think somebody shoved a radio inside my TV because I hear Gary Cohen coming out of it.

This will take some getting used to. Maybe five whole innings.

The new commercial with the TV head guy painting the gir's toenails with Yankee pinstripes is totally unacceptable.

Here's a newsflash SNY - the Yankees have their own channel. You were born with a mandate to cover the Mets. Screw the MFYs!

Posted

"You were born with a mandate to cover the Mets."

No they weren't. Particularly not once the game is over.
This station sees itself - and are trying to sell themselves - as a sports station that carries the Mets as opposed to just a Met's station.

We'll see how this all shakes out in reality.
