Guest mlbaseballtalk Guests Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 In the NLCS thread I wrote this:]2) Bonilla and Henderson caught tons of abuse (granted with Bonilla it was more piling on) for their card game during Game 6 1999 NLCS. So much that Bonilla was gone almost instantaniously and Henderson was sent packing after an unproductive early 2000. So not only would Mex catch grief, but what about a nude Kevin Mitchell calling for plane reservations at the same time! Well now Mitchell gets chuckles because he went up there without, erm, his protection, to deliver his hit. Which brings up another question about Hernandez's true leadership. The guy just made the second out of the inning and the best he can do is sulk in the locker room because he doesn't want to see the season end "that way?" Oh that says alot about his faith in Gary Carter by the way...3) The other part of that story is that Keith wasn't moving from his seat due to supersitiousness. I'd have to check the timeline again from a tape I have, wheither or not it happened after the wild pitch to score Mitchell, but Keith is clearly shown IN THE DUGOUT rooting the team on and it doesn't look like he was planning on coming out there for the top of the 12th. Really does say something about the "Captain" of that team though if he'd rather not move from his seat when the Mets are making the rally of the yearJust popped in my copy of the game from the MLB butchered production of it andA) No sign of Hernandez, so I don't know where the footage of a shouting Hernandez comes from as I've seen it spliced into various 10th inning montages through the years and Just worth noting about the "amusing anedocte" that Mitchell a) was on the phone to get a flight to SD while nude when told he was pinch hitting and was batting sans groin protection is that as Carter was getting ready to hit, Vin Scully says Kevin Mitchell to hit for Rick Augliera. Granted thats an educated guess as it was either him or backup catchers Ed Hearn and John Gibbons left on the bench, but that would mean Mitch would actually be calling as the second and/or first out was being made! Talk about putting cart before the horse! And talk about no faith in the Met comback ability off of Schraildi! No wonder the Mets traded the bum! =Steve
HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 And we were pushing midnight on a Saturday when Mitchell was allegedly phoning for "plane reservations." I have no doubt he was on the phone, but I'm skeptical he was talking to the Flushing rep for Liberty Travel. Also, in the spring of 87, Gammons did a story about this game for SI, and Mitchell said he was in the clubhouse, because with Schiraldi, a righty, on the mound, he figured Danny Heep would get called on to pinch hit. This demonstrates how players sometimes don't pay attention to what goes on pitch-by-pitch. Heep had hit for Santana way back in the fifth inning (another of Davey's questionable moves in that series).

Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 I should point out that John Gibbons was not on the active post-season roster in 1986. He was with the team in case of emergency. (If a catcher had been injured during the LCS he could have been activated for the World Series.) He was also doing bullpen catching and stuff. But he wasn't available as a pinch hitter.Ed Hearn was on the active roster for both post season series, as was Randy Neimann, but neither saw any action at all.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 If I'm not mistaken, and my memory is somewhat fuzzy on this, I think Hearn would've come in if Game 6 had gone another inning. I remember thinking that Hearn might get his chance if the game had gone on. There is a chance, however, that I'm thinking of Game 6 of the NLCS.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 It kind of stinketh that the Mets championship came during the season the teams were dancing around antic-ompetitive activity by agreeing to carry only 24 players.Certainly stunketh for Gibbons --- or Rick Anderson or whoever that 25th man might have been.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 If Niemann or Hearn didn't see any action, neither would have Gibbons or Anderson.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 Theoretically, sure (though Anderson, being a righthander, wouldn't have been directly behind Nieman on the depth chart), but they'd've seen a full World Series share. Maybe gotten a few more bookings on the soup circuit.

Maybe if Mex had stayed on the bench he would've been yelling at Carter, Mitchell, Knight or Mookie that we'll fight if you swing at any fastballs.Wow, those games really do blur together.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 Someone - a pitcher I'm sure (Anderson?) - was dropped from the roster in favor of Elster on Aug 31. Whoever it was wasn't really dropped of course since the rosters were expanded the next day but it allowed Elster to be available for the post-season at the expense of one hurler.I heard a radio interview w/Gibbons the other day and he said that he was traveling w/the team the whole time but of course was inactive for the series. Spent most of it in the bullpen. Also mentioned that he did get awarded a partial share - 1/4 I think.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 Anderson was dropped.Sure Gibbons got a quarter share. Anderson probably got a half.A twenty-fifth man on the roster would have gotten a mandatory full share. What I'm saying is regrettable was the whole labor strongarm of the 24-man-roster year, and I'm sorry it occurred in a year I prize so.

Believe me, he earned the right to be part of a WS winner. But what else did he earn? Does anyone recall if he got a share of the winner's pot, and if so, what size share?Later
Zach Thornton Syracuse Mets - AAA LHP On Sunday, the southpaw tossed five shutout innings as the bulk pitcher. He gave up 2 hits, walked 2 and had 5 strikeouts. Explore Zach Thornton News >
