Going through our old attic, I found Met Fact and Opinion.

It's an offseason thread, but a lot of fun allusions to what was going on at the time.

Opinion: That thread totally rocked.

Fact: I hope by including the following fact, this thread rises to life again and thrives.

Fact: The 17 games the Mets have remaining with Western Division teams are the most among all NL East teams.

Opinion: Despite my problems with Willie, I suspect that his slowly bumping David Wright up in the lineup, as frustrating as it was, will someday contrast positively with Davey Johnson seeking to build his lineup around Gregg Jefferies early in Gregg's career.

Fact: At one point architects drew up plans for a roof to cover Shea Stadium, but engineers determined that the stadium's footings could not bear the weight of a roof. In addition, plans were prepared to increase the capacity of Shea Stadium to 90,000, but those plans have never proved to be economically viable

Opinion - That's not good, we pretty much suck on the West Coast.

Fact - Jose Reyes has the longest hitting streak ever by a Mets SS and currently the longest in the NL.

Opinion: Don't tell the enemy I said so, but nobody should throw him a fastball within three feet of the plate.

Fact: The Mets drafted Butch Benton number one in 1975. He was the only one of their 27 June picks to become a Met, and he only made it to the biggies because John Stearns kept getting hurt.

That draft also saw the Mets select --- but fail to sign --- Rich Wortham, Charlie Lea, and John Tudor, who would go on to pitch 3075.3 and garner exactly 200 career victories.

Opinion: The Mets of the mid-70's had horrid scouting and baseball development staffs because the De Louret sisters and M. Donald Grant knew nothing about how to run a modern day baseball club

Fact: The GM in those years, Joe McDonald went on to help the Cards win the World Series in 1982, and still is gainfully employed as a scout based in Florida today. (I think he's with the Red Sox organization now)
