Bill Shannon doing the official scoring.

Long but interesting article on the Bill Shannon and his colleagues, what I like about this is that you hear these guys mentioned during the course of a game but never see them.

]Michael Kay, the Yankees play-by-play announcer, is one of the most outspoken on the subject. He's even gone so far as to question the accuracy of some of baseball's all-time records, noting that one or two undeserved hits could make significant impacts.
Not surprising that Kay thinks he knows more than someone else.

Last night, during the Red Sox game, Damon hit a sharp grounder to the left to the third baseman. He totally fumbled it, but I could see how it could be ruled either way. . .personally, I marked it down as an error, as did the official scorer, but everyone in the audience was screaming that it was a hit.
