Newsday says, "The last mistake came with one out in the 10th inning, when Rob Mackowiak hit a bouncer at Miguel Cairo, and Cairo, as sound a defender the Mets have, whipped a throw wide of Jose Offerman."

That this myth of Cairo being good glove-man persists after that play is disappointing. Matsui makes that play, he's on page one.

Writing that Cairo is a bad defender would make the writers have to go against all those glowing "Steady Fielding" and "He's a pro" kinds of articles they wrote about him when he was a MFY. And sportswriters never admit their mistakes.

Even if he was 10 times better than Matsui, how can you possibly say that he's "as sound a defender the Mets have" when you have Beltran and Cameron roaming the outfield? Not too mention Minky at first.

BTW, where the hell is Minky? He hasn't played since June 25.

The Post reports:

] Afterward, Cairo said, "I've got to make that play." Asked where the throw was, Offerman replied, "The [bleeping] ball was too far from me. That's the only thing I can say."

If he should persist in presenting little range and more than occasional fumbles, the story will be bad Met luck.

But no, he was never that good as a Yankee.
