Not football but I couldn't resist

Herman Edwards after KC beats the Jets 27-7 wrote:
"I wish we could have made more of a game of it, but it wasn't," said Jets coach Herman Edwards. "They took us behind the woodshed and whupped us."

This thread needed a bump anyway.

Piazza on the fans ..

]"Truthfully, [the fans] don't have to do anything more than they've already done," Piazza said. "Ever since the All-Star break, they've been great. There have been times I didn't think I deserved it.

Piazza on what's to come...

]"Life is definitely just forks in the road, and I haven't got to the next one

Willie on Trachsel

]"He has an option and unless the organization feels like going in a different direction, I expect he'll be here,"

Carl Everett on whether or not he is faithful to his wife:

]Not in all cases. She knows. I did it away from her. But I'm quite sure she still prays for me. [God] keeps me. But those demons are still going to come. That's why I say it's tough to live holy and resist temptation because those demons get prettier and prettier. Their bodies get better and better. It's one of the toughest fights I've had in my life.

That Carl Everett line reminded me of something form Ball Four.

The plane bringing the Seattle Pilots home from an extended road trip has just landed. Manager Joe Schultz stands up and says something like, "OK guys. There are a lot of wives and sweethearts waiting for you. Try to look horny."

Also from 'Ball Four':

Female fan to pitcher in pen: "Hey, are you married?"
Pitcher: "Yeah, but I'm not a fanatic about it."

Also from Ball Four on a tangential subject:

MLB sent out a questionnaire to the players. One question was, "What was the most difficult thing you've had to do as a major leaguer?"

Seattle first baseman Mike Hegan answered "trying to convince your wife why she needs a Pennicilin shot for your kidney infection."

The guy sitting next to me at Shea last Sunday, after WWSB pulled Mikey for DeFelice in the top of the 8th, before Mikey could have that final at-bat -

Rodriguez is such a stand up guy...asked if he thought the MFYs were the best team in baseball...

]"I still do," he said. "That's what's unfortunate. Maybe if I would have contributed some we'd be moving on to Chicago. Better take a long look in the mirror at myself. I didn't do my part."

Love it. It's even better that Jeter had such a good game--that's sure to foster lots of speculation in the rags about a rift.

I said it last year, and I'll say it again: A-Rod can't handle the pressure. Normally I don't place too much stock in shit like that, but in big games both last year and this year he never looked comfortable at the plate.

It's just his excuse du jour to look at himself in the mirror.

Now that is a quote worth quoting. Bravo SK. It's funnier if you picture him looking in the mirror and talking like Fleur from Harry Potter.

Thanks CF. My kids will love the Fleur analogy <g>

Luis Sojo on A-Dog..

]It's a shame," Sojo said, "because all he cares about is winning. He comes to the ballpark and all he talks about is baseball. He's got a long way to go here. [Rodriguez is signed through the 2010 season.] He has a chance to win four or five championships."

yeah that's all he cares about.

]Pedro Martinez gave New York Mets beat writers his business card before heading off for the Dominican Republic. The card included his cellphone number, with one restriction: Call only in case of emergencies. Said Pedro, "Call me when we get Manny (Ramirez)."

Today's column by [url=http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs2005/columns/story?columnist=caple_jim&id=2191911]Jim Caple[/url] had a couple of good ones.

]But one walk in three games and just five in the past eight? At that rate the Chicago bullpen may not pitch enough innings to even get voted a postseason share. As it is, the White Sox became the first team to throw consecutive postseason complete games since Billy Ray Cyrus had a career.

And

](There also has been poor use of the Rally Monkey. There finally was a little electricity in the park after reliever Kevin Gregg struck out the side in the top of the seventh inning, and it would have been a great situation for the Monkey. Instead, the Angels held the Monkey until the eighth inning when the bottom of the order was due up. Was this delay due to the mandatory playing of "God Bless America" during the seventh inning stretch or was it another disturbing sign of baseball's increasing specialization? If Rally Monkeys are refusing to work middle relief when the team trails by three runs or more, we might as well fold up shop and go home.)

Well, I'm still rooting for the Sox, but if they don't win, it won't break my achy breaky heart.

From the great link Lubitul posted about the 69 Mets....

]Some people still might not believe in us," said Jones, "but then, some people still think the world is flat."

and I wanted to post this bit for the article, mujst have been a special time in NY...

]With the kind of jubilation it reserves for its special heroes, New York went pleasantly mad when the Mets won. From the sleek skyscrapers of Wall Street, where a spontaneous tickertape blizzard greeted the victory, to the undistinguished bars of a hundred neighborhoods, where the toasts were in draft beer, the shouted cry was: "We're No. 1!" Teachers suspended classes because their transistor- equipped students were not paying attention anyway; bosses closed offices early for the same reason, and even policemen shrugged happily as they despaired of keeping order in the streets.

Roy Oswalt recounting how he and other teammates were poking fun at Brad Lidge regarding Pujols' monster home run:

"We kidded with him the whole time on the plane today," Game 6 starter Roy Oswalt said. "We actually told him we almost got hit by the ball when we took off."

]Good gracious, they're going to have a good team. Aren't they? I like where I'm going [San Diego], and I'm in center field again. But I'll be watching for those New York Mets.

you'd be bitter too if they sent you to detroit, and you'd be very gracious if they sent you to nice, sunny san diego.

That's why Cammy is a nice man, whereas Minky is a bitter prick.

I wonder if Minky still thinks the team has its head up it's ass?

I really liked Cameron and hate that we traded him. He always seemed to be a good guy that played hard and truly loved the game. He has done nothing to diminish that perception of him since his trade.

Now that Delgado is in the clean up slot, Cameron would have fit nicely batting 6th or 7th spot and playing right field. Maybe the money saved by moving Cameron helped to make the Delgado trade possible.
