]Mazzilli never should have been hired in the first place . . . (he) sure didn't display a dynamic personality.

Good answer by Willie. From the Daily News.

So why not start Seo earlier, given Ishii's troubles?

"I never second-guess myself," Randolph said. "I never do that."

Willie, on why he's not giving a pep talk before the road trip:

]You don't want to raise robots and tell them everything.

That's a great quote. Can you imagine what would happen when the robots know everything? Professor Frink knows:

]You've got to listen to me. Elementary chaos theory tells us that all robots will eventually turn against their masters and run amok in an orgy of blood and the kicking and the biting with the metal teeth and the hurting and shoving.

"To me," says Phillies closer Billy Wagner, "guys who scuff the ball or put pine tar on the ball -- that's not cheating."

On David Wright's barehanded catch:

]"If that's not the play of the year, I'll protest," Mientkiewicz said, already lobbying ESPN to give Wright an ESPY award. "He had better not get a girlfriend between now and the ESPY's, because I want to go with him."

Then we'll have to put Mientkiewicz's picture in the wifey watch.

On the right side of the page (scroll down a little), there is an entire Doug Meink quotebook

]"A guy tonight screamed, 'Mientkiewicz, you suck.' I had to turn around and agree with him. I said, 'You're absolutely right, sir. I feel I owe you. I should pay you the admission you paid.'" --on heckler etiquette

From the same source:

]"When you have your fourth and fifth guys out of the lineup, it's hard. Then you end up with Doug Mientkiewicz as your cleanup guy." --Mets manager Willie Randolph, on Doug Mientkiewicz and his career .405 SLG hitting cleanup

Ouch!!

All right, then Edgy's pic will have to replace the bachelor in the wifey watch. Should help maintain gay icon status.

Marlon Anderson on Beltran/Cameron...

]"I couldn't imagine being a paramedic, going to the scene of a wreck," Anderson said, "because that's pretty much what it was -- a wreck. Personally, I haven't seen so much blood. It was like a car accident. Two people running their hardest, then colliding in mid-air trying to catch the ball. It wasn't good."

"Don't read the internet, read a book or something"

- Chris Russo, 8/15/05, responding to a caller who said he read on the internet that Gerald Williams intentionally didn't make a play on the hit that broke up Pedro's no-hitter.

You both make strong points

I heard 2 seperate callers since Sunday attempt to make the argument that Williams intentionally didn't catch the ball because of some long ago feud he supposedly once had w/Pedro -- "he hates him, I know he hates him" -- and at least one other referred to the triple as "an error".

In all cases the host(s) were wise enough to dismiss them with extreme prejudice.

---Kris Benson on whether he and ex-manager Llyod McClendon (not the best of friends) will talk during the upcoming Pirates-Mets series

Not baseball, but funny:
