"He's got to deal with it. All of it. It's good for him. And the better he does, the more I am going to give him to do. He will carry all my bags as long as I'm here. I read his fan mail sometimes - girls are asking to marry him - and it makes me sick. One of these days, I swear I'm going to smack him."
--Cliff Floyd on David Wright 6/6/05

Good NYT article.

adding from the existing thread:

He's my left-handed guy, so I'm going to bring him in against left-handers and hope he produces. That's the bottom line. But I'm not into reevaluating every time he pitches like he's on trial and start to overreact to how he does in each outing. Obviously he didn't pitch too well [Tuesday] night. Doesn't mean I'm going to throw him in the shitpile or nothing."

--WWSB on Koo. 6/1/05

"I just got wet. Water is a blessing, I believe, so I got wet."
--Pedro on the sprinklers. 6/2

Piazza on scoring from First..

"30 feet or 20 feet from home plate I felt my legs in mud or concrete. I felt the lactic acid piling up."
--6/2

"As soon as I slipped I was like, 'Oh, -- -- , "I could see a little blur of the ball and I put my glove where I thought it was going to be. I looked up and everybody was screaming. I was like, 'I caught it.' "
--Cameron on his great catch, 6/2

I was only half-listening to Baseball Tonight last night, so this may be more of a paraphrase:
John Kruk:
"I'm sick of hearing about how the American League teams are at a disadvantage when playing in National League ballparks. If they want to get their bats into the lineup, then teach them how to play a position. That (ED NOTE: the AL rule that allows some players to only bat) is NOT a position."

some great quotes from tonights game...

Pedro on the no-hitter..

"I didn't really realize it until I heard the fans continue to clap after he rounded second," Martinez said. "I never looked at the scoreboard. I'm normally looking everywhere else, but not the scoreboard."

Willie on the Mets never having a no-hitter...

"I didn't know that," Randolph said. "I thought maybe Tom Seaver did back in the day because I used to watch him or Jerry Koosman because they were lights out."

Peterson on Pedro...
"He's got two great swing-and-miss pitches," pitching coach Rick Peterson said. "A Buggs Bunny changeup and a Bugs Bunny curveball."

"The thing about athletes is that we work to hard to earn our money. I got kids to feed. I can't let him take money off my table. When you do stupid stuff like that, you're taking chances on hurting people, taking a chance on losing people for games. For just the sake of what - I don't want to face you? So put me on. Four pitches. It's simple. But when our egos get in the way, that's how people end up in prisons, end up dead. It's unfortunate."
--Cliff Floyd getting slightly dramatic on Roy Oswalt, 6/7

The whole "food out of my children's mouth" thing is old. But then he finished strong.

Still, today is not a good day to wake up and find you're Lance Berkman.

]The thing about athletes is that we work to hard to earn our money. I got kids to feed. I can't let him take money off my table.
I didn't realize Latrell Sprewell plays left field for the Mets. My opinion of him will be tainted forever. I don't want to see people get hurt, but he's got enough money to feed his kids and all of their kids if he retired today. Maybe he was just mad and he's not as big of a jackass as this quote makes him seem.

I understand your feeling insulted when guys like Sprewell and Floyd talk about putting food on the table but remember it is just a metaphor - they do not mean it literally, how could they possibly?

Yes its a bad metaphor for someone who is making tens of millions of dollars per year but still.

And besides that what one makes and what one spends is all relative. I know lots of wealthy people who live paycheck to paycheck because as they earn more they lifestyles increase exponentially.

Will these people ever be homesless and destitute? No, but if somehow their current earning status was reduced or stopped completely drastic changes would have to be made.

Don't assume that just because some make what appears to be a boatload of money that their lives are perfect.

Money doesn't buy happiness. It just makes it easier to attain by removing a lot of obstacles.

Don't be so hard on Cliffy - the adrenaline was still pumpin'

Maybe he's mad? He hits a grand slam off Oswalt then gets drilled twice as a result, yet has no ability to get any one-on-one recourse without hurting the team.

So, he stays on the field, does the right thing for his team, and talks later. Of course he was mad. This asswipe has thrown at him twice, and yesterday's was particularly egregious since it was clearly done in a situation where Floyd would have been intentionally walked.

You're both probably right, he was most likely just pissed off.

I'm not assuming that his life is perfect, I'm just assuming that his kids aren't going to go hungry.

Also a bit of a difference between Sprewell complaining about having to struggle to feed the family without an immediate contract extension, and Cliff saying that he doesn't want to do it with a possible career-ending injury lurking.
It's still an over-used cliche, but there are differences in circumstances.

Right.

Hopefully the next athelete to be quoted in a similar situation will choose to say something more appropriate like "Hey, I got a yacht that has a full time crew! These guys need to be paid - they have kids to feed!"

On Pedro: "He doesn't have the career record that he has because of his talent," the Mets' Mike Cameron said.

"He's just really an artist when he's on," Piazza said. "It's really a lot of improv out there."

Burke on his hit...

"It's kind of a culmination of thoughts," Burke said. "First, it's just the gratification of knowing you hit the ball well. Then you realize that you've broken up a no-hitter and it's your first homer and it's off Pedro Martinez. When I got into the dugout, I really kind of had to sit down for a second."

Graves is not an official Met yet but some cool quotes from him..

]"This is awesome," the former Reds closer said. "Cincinnati was a real struggle the last few years, just trying to compete, and we didn't do very well. To be able to come to a team that's right there in the hunt, with so many good players and two Hall of Fame pitchers on the staff, it's just amazing. It's almost like a dream come true."

Pedro on Graves...

]"Another crazy guy in this locker room."

Alex Rodreguez on his 400th home run...

"I am excited to do it in this uniform," Rodriguez said. "As much as I wanted to be a New York Yankee, I am pretty proud."

This is one reasom why I depise him, acting like all his 400 homers were hit as a MFY.

I was going to start an all-new "All Purpose Carl Everett Is A Moron Thread," but I figured I'd just add this here instead:

Chicago White Sox designated hitter Carl Everett, infamous for his run-in with umpire Ron Kulpa in 2000 while playing for the Boston Red Sox, sounds off on a number of issues in the July edition of Maxim magazine. Some of the highlights, as reported by The Chicago Tribune.

• Everett has had gay teammates, whom he has accepted, but: "Gays being gay is wrong. Two women can't produce a baby, two men can't produce a baby, so it's not how it's supposed to be. ... I don't believe in gay marriages. I don't believe in being gay."

• Wrigley Field is the worst park in the majors: "They need to implode Wrigley."

• Most baseball fans don't know diddly: "Fan is short for fanatic -- he's crazy about something he really doesn't know about. And it's proven that 99 percent of baseball fans have no idea what they're watching."

• Jose Canseco is a "bitter, ignorant individual."

• The congressional hearings examining steroid use were a waste: "We have a war going on -- I have family in that war -- yet we're talking about steroids. ... If everybody in the world got on steroids, we'll still lose more kids to a war than we will from steroids."

I'll give him Canseco, and he's probably within ten percent of correct on the fan statement, but he's still a moron.

Everet is something else, of course this is the same guy that doesn't believe Dinosaurs roamed the earth because it's not in the Bible.

Everett is a moron. But he does have a right to his opinions as misinformed as they might be. I don't agree with his views on gays but what irks me is that he apparently thinks most fans are stupid. But I guess most fans think he's stupid too.

I'm all for players being honest about their opinions, especially since so many of them always say nothing but the "right" things that are bland and give away nothing of what they really think, but at the same time they've also got to know when to shut up too.

Actually, he proved he can think outside the box.
He took a famous Rey Ordonez quote ("New York fans are stupid") and expanded to all baseball fans. It takes a special person to be able to think that globally. (insert sarcastic emoticon here)

But, he is right when he says that Congress has more important things to think about than the use of steroids in sports.

As for the other stuff - I pass.

For those of you who don't follow Connecticut politics, the last Governor, John Rowland was brought up on corruption charges, resigned, and is now in jail.
This morning I had a meeting with the current Lt. Governor, Kevin Sullivan. When Rowland's name came up, he said:
"The ex-Governor took early retirement and is now living in a gated community."
