According to Faith and Fear in Flushing, the Mets, after yesterday, are 1-6-6 in double headers against the Giants. The lone double-header sweep came in 1979, of all seasons � about as (otherwise) unremarkable a season as the Mets have had. Joe Torre was your manager. Lorinda de Roulet was the team president. Joe McDonald was GM, E-I-E-I-O.

Steve Freakin' Albert had recently replaced Lindsay Nelson on the broadcast team.

Here's the box to game one. Kevin Kobel was your winning pitcher, but his beard wouldn't fly on today's team.

Here's the box to game two. Andy Hassler was your winner. Great game, but he would win only one more in his Met career.

Steve Henderson was on fire, garnering 12 total bases on the day. Yet no UMDB users have shared any memories of either game.

Even though I don't remember it exactly, it's running through my head. All because the Mets played a doubleheader against the Giants yesterday.

I wasn't there (I was three), but this raises an interesting question that I wanted to bring up about the UMDB.

I'm trying to go through and compile stats from all the games I've ever attended. I found my collection of ticket stubs from when I was a kid (I went to a lot more games -- and a lot more pitched complete games -- than I thought I did), and I'm going to do what I can manually compile, but how about this:

Yancy, is there a way that you can program an option to save "my games"? You can create an account, then "bookmark" games to your account. Then there can be an option on your account page to "show all stats" or something like that, and it'll automatically compile stats from the games you have saved.

Does this make sense? Is it totally crazy? I know nothing of programming.

This also reminds me that years ago a friend of mine rewrote "Lamb of God" to be sung to the tune of "Blue Moon." (The rock and roll, version. You know, the one with the bomp-badda-bomp-badda-bomp-bomp-bomp vocals.)

It went something like "Lamb lamb lamb lamb lamb, of God God God God God, you take away the sins sins sins sins sins, o-of the worrrrrld."

It's an interesting idea. So far I've avoided anything involving logins, and cookies, etc. I've been looking for an excuse to play with cookies, mainly for my own technical development, so something like you suggest might be workable.

I did go to a lot of games in 1979 as a 14 (going on 15) year old, but that summer I was in L.A.

I probably saw the scores in the L.A. Times the next morning and thought 'Finally! The Mets are making a move!'

The names Kevin Kobel, Steve Henderson and yes, even Steve Albert are precious Mets memories for me.

Sidenote: I became a big fan of Jim Murray as a youngster through my LA Times exposure. Everything you have heard about the kind of writer he was is true. He was incredible, a joy to read.
