what about players who reportedly passed through waivers back in August (high priced vets like Sosa, Piazza etc.)? can they be traded freely now or do they have to be waived again - giving teams chance to block the move?

it is pretty funny that Embree and Stanton sucked so bad as LOOGYs for each team that they ended up on the other.

I believe if they passed all the way through, with every team having a chance to claim them, they can be traded immediately.
If a team put in a claim for them when they passed through the last time, I believe you have to either deal with that club, or get them to withdraw their claim.

I think no waiver claim is valid if made by a team that's now ahead of you in the standings.

No... if a team claimed your player, and you didn't deal him or let him go to that team -- and pulled him back -- then he's yours. You can't run him through waivers again, and he can't be dealt... I think he can only be cut at this point (or at least DFAed).

Yeah a player CAN be put on the wire again in the same waiver period. The only difference is that the 2nd time it must be IRrevocable waivers - ie. he can't be pulled back if claimed.

In a case like Stanton - who almost shirley passed unclaimed the first time around - I assume he can be dealt unencumbered (except for his personal no trade clause of course) from the moment he cleared through the remainder of the season. IOW, he didn't have to clear waivers just this week as long as he cleared earlier as far as I know. There are limits on how long those waivers of good for but I think Aug/Sept is one waiver period.

Which reminds me that some MFY fan called FAN the other day demanding that the Yanx strike a deal for AJ Burnett just for this weekend. Of course he slid right past those minor details about how he'd get through waivers, who they might give up for him, why the Marlins would lose out on the draft pick compensation just to help the Yanx, etc. ... but it was a nice try.

Apparently, Mrs. Shaun Fitzmaurice was a teen-aged basketball star.

At least, I think they're talking about basketball. It's not terribly clear.

Improving a pitching staff by no longer being on it?

Johnie boy wouldn't be the first pitcher to be able to claim that.

So, Yancy, have you emailed Mackey and invited him to join us yet?

You're setting me up for another heartbreak, aren't you?

I think my skills aren't suited for the Welcome Wagon committee. Somebody else should step in and take my place.

I'll bet Mackey's not like those other guys

I hope Mackey returns e-mails better than he returned balls back to the pitcher.

He probably circles his mouse above the Send button a bunch of times before he finally clicks it.

You guys!!!! When Yancy writes to him and he comes here and reads this, after Yancy writes to him, he's gonna be sad and leave!!

Was Swoboda the former Met folks were anxiously looking for in the wake of Katrina?

And the guy presenting that lecture has a former teammate whose daughter is starring in goal for University of South Florida's women's soccer team.

And he has a former opponent who will continue managing the US international squad in November, leading a team of minor leaguers looking to qualify for the Olympics.

Oakland has asked for--and received-- permission to interview Texas pitching coach Orel Hershisher for its managerial vacancy. They've already spoken to in-house candidates Bob Geren and Ron Washington...

Yes, by the way, Swoboda was the former Met whose whereabouts following the hurricane were unknown.

Did Dwight Gooden get arrested again or something?

He's getting a huge number of hits today on the UMDB, and they're not all coming from the same source. A lot of people are doing Google, Yahoo, etc. searches on his name today.

Anybody have any idea why? I searched in Google News, and there's nothing news. I did a straight Google search, and the UMDB was the second page listed! (And maybe that explains it. Maybe that page was recently re-ranked, and it moved up to a prominent notch.)

Cleon Jones had appeared as the top hit once or twice this week. I feared the worst.*

*That the Yankees had hired him or something.
