Tony Clark has hit his 24 & 25th home runs for Arizona today. He's now batting .308 on the season.

Kazmir hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 14 innings (all against Toronto), striking out 20 and only allowing 10 hits & 2 walks during that time.

He now has a line of: 3.85 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 8.55 K/9, 1.88 K/BB, 0.59 HR/9

Since the All-Star Break:

2.71 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 10.58 K/9, 2.69 K/BB, 0.41 HR/9

Kid's definitely getting better.

For a 21-year-old pitching in that division when a less desperate team probably would have kept him in AAA until the All-Star Break, he's having an excellent year. His ERA is lower than Randy Johnson's, even after yesterday. And it's lower than Glavine's, Benson's, and yes, Zambrano's.

(sigh)

Sigh, indeed.

Not to induce even more heavy sighing, but the AL has averaged .30 more runs per game than the NL, which means Kaz could have been expected to give up about 5.66 fewer runs in the NL, bringing his expected NL ERA down to 3.55.

In terms of park factor, however, Shea is actually playing less like a pitcher's park than Tropicana--0.974 versus 0.911. If he had played 14 games at Shea instead of Tropicana, he'd have given up around 1.953 more runs, bringing his total ERA to 3.65.

HOWEVER, we've been much more efficient in terms of defense than Tampa, having converted .703 of batted balls that aren't HR into outs (good for 9th overall, 4th in the NL), compared to 0.685 for Tampa (23rd overall, 11th in the AL). I'm not sure how to equate that into his ERA, but I think that would equal 4 fewer hits, bring his WHIP down to 1.43.

Likely, he'd also have better strikeout numbers. 6.4 avg for NL as opposed to 6.1 for AL--likely due to facing the pitcher--which would give him an extra 8 K's on the season.

HOWEVER, he'd probably walk more, as is the case in the NL (3.2/G v. 3.0/G) likely due to walking the number 8 hitter to get to the pitcher, which brings his BB up by 5 walks.

The net result?

3.65 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 8.98 K/9, 1.87 K/BB

If I had even MORE time on my hands than I obviously do, I'd factor in the divisions we play for.

I mean, the guy's faced the Sox & Yankees six times this season, which has got to skew things a bit.

Don't worry about the number crunching, I think the point has been made.

I don't remember Kazmir facing the Yanks this year.

He faced the MFYs twice and the Sox 4 times.

I have no memory of the Y games. Maybe I blacked it out.

He'll miss the MFYs this week though.

]Michael Eisner, in Hong Kong for today's opening of a Disneyland theme park, was asked by The Associated Press to name his worst mistake during his reign as Walt Disney Co. chief executive.

Eisner called the signing of Mo Vaughn by the Disney-owned Anaheim Angels after the 1998 season "the worst personnel move I've ever made or approved, worse than the one you're probably thinking about."

He was referring to the naming of Michael Ovitz as Disney president in 1995. Ovitz was gone after 15 months, and he got a severance package estimated at $130 million.

The Angels signed Vaughn for $80 million over six years, and he was gone after three, traded to the New York Mets.

And then they traded him for Appier, who they released after a year. At least we collected on insurance. So there!

Mike Hampton could miss all of 2006 with an elbow injury.

I never wish injury on anyone, but Hampton is a guy I just can't work up a whole lot of sympathy for.

The thing about Hampton and the Braves is if you remember the deal that landed him there was a complicated 3-team multi-player trade with all kinds of contracts changing hands and mucho money being swapped as well to make those deals go down.
Anyway, next year is the year where the Braves start paying full freight on Hampton. Up to this point, the Marlins & Rox were chipping in so as to partially escape the obligations to Preston Wilson, Charles Johnson, et al.

Now I'm sure that Schurholz & co have long taken this into consideration and have had their budgets reflect the cost as if it were approx $9mil/yr instead of $3 - $3 - $3 - $15 - $15 - $15 (or whatever the exact figures are). Still, if he needs the surgery that takes a big bite out of their total.
I guess they'll just be forced to bring some 20 y/o up out of single-A to go 15-4 as a replacement.

Jeff Reardon has a ballfield named after him in the Berkshires so I'll bet he's in that HOF too.

Jason Tyner had three hits (one a triple) and two RBI for the Twins today, and his average sits at .350.
The Twins and Santana shut out the White Sox.
Man, that race in the AL Central is getting close.

Well we all knew Jason Tyner could hit for average. The problem was his amazing lack of power.

]September 22, 2005 -- HARTFORD, Conn. The state human-rights agency is looking into a bias complaint at a Greenwich beach involving several women, including the wives of two former New York Mets.
The state Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities is investigating the claim by Millie Bonilla and Sheila Foster that they were not allowed to enter the beach at Greenwich Point Park on June 7 because of the color of their skin. The women are part of an exercise group of mostly black and Hispanic residents. Bonilla, who is Hispanic, and Foster, who is black, are the wives of former Mets Bobby Bonilla and George Foster. Sigh. I've been to that beach before. They might keep you out if you aren't a snooty rich snob, but not because of race.

My friend bowled with Bobby Bo a couple of times here in CT.

Interesting that the Bonilla and Foster wives hang out together. Their husbands could be a 20,000 Pyramid category: Expensive Mets Outfielders Who Flopped.

I'm glad, at least, that Millie Bonilla seems to have gotten past that lip-synching scandal from a few years back.

Bobby Bo had a better inaugural Mets' season than our current center fielder.

Actually, Foster kind of did too.
