Just saw only the seventh total hit of the game for both teams together.

It's a strange game these days.

An article in The Athletic today about how the banning of the shift did NOT bring the base hit back. I didn't dive into it but it shows that sometimes the result of what you think you're going to get isn't always the case.

It's harder to bring back the base hit if that's not what they're really going for.

Vientos doubles on the first pitch of the 10th, and my first reaction is to think, cool., we've got the leadoff hitter on ... not even thinking of the runner already on 2nd. So five years in and I'm still not used to this whole ghost runner thingie.

But, as we all know, the visiting team needs more than one run in the clown car era.

The gist is that (1) the focus on defense and positioning is a big part of the long-term decline in batting average, combined with (2) different hitting strategies (better to hit it in the air than on the ground).

There was a one-year uptick in batting average after the shift was banned but those two long-term trends have not changed.

Inneresting to see Brew-John and not Taylor getting the pinch-running call.

I think it’s to keep it a 1:1 substitution.  Baty to first, Bichette to third, Brujan to short for the bottom of the tenth.

Semien eliminating the double-play with the steal is HEROIC!

See?  There are multiple ways to avoid DPs.

We end up with a hard out, but it would have been two otherwise.
