The return of Kodai Senga couldn't have come at a better time for the New York Mets.

The right-hander was activated from the 15-day injured list by the Mets to start Tuesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. Right-handed reliever Jonathan Pintaro was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse and infielder Vidal Brujan was designated for assignment to make room on the 26-man roster for infielder Zack Short, who was claimed off waivers the day before.

Senga has been out since April 28 with lumbar spine inflammation. He had made five starts with a 9.00 ERA before landing on the IL, including 13 walks in 20 innings. He made four rehab appearances, posting a 4.00 ERA with six walks and 17 strikeouts in 18 innings.

Senga's return comes a day after the Mets placed right-hander Christian Scott went on the 15-day IL and a rough start by right-hander Tobias Myers that night in a 12-0 loss to the Reds.

Pintaro had been called up Monday in a bullpen shuffle and pitched 3⅔ innings, allowing two runs on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

I can't complain. He was a stud his first year, 2023. 2024 was a single game, but a good game. 2025 was a good year overall; before his terrible final three starts, he had a 2.35 ERA in 19 games. He still finished with a 3.02 ERA. I still don't know why they sent him down to Syracuse. Of all people to send to Syracuse last year, why Senga? I think he'll rebound in 2026.

So not even including tonight's ongoing 1st inning disaster: since the June 12th game last season (iow: almost exactly one year) when Senga took that awkward flip from Alonso and had to leave mid-game, he's made:

--- 14 starts. threw 59.67 Innings, allowed 69 hits [10.4 H/9], 56 ER [8.45 ERA], issued 37 walks [5.58 BB/9], and K'd 62 [9.35 K/9]. The K rate is the only stat there that one wouldn't describe as terrible.  And guess what, it's getting worse by the minute.
