Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 17, 2024 Posted September 17, 2024 Mendy confirms Torrens would have played second.I like the nickname "Mendy." It suggests that he's chronically mendacious, which totally hasn't been my experience, but that's a fun caricature of a manager to work with, coming out after the game and lying to the media about everything.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2024 Posted September 17, 2024 Torrens wouldn't have been the heaviest second baseman I've seen. After the two NY teams moved West, when they visited Philadelphia, some games were telecast back to New York. For a few games that year, Pancho Herrera (6'3" 220+ pounds) played second for Philly. In one game I saw against LA, somebody missed a hit and run pitch and Frank Howard (6'7" 250+pounds) was "stealing" second. They collided at second base and I think the resulting force weakened Connie Mack Stadium so much that the had to replace it with the Vet. (well, maybe an exaggeration, but not by much) I was something to behold.Later
