Did George Plimpton host the Mets' independence Day Fireworks Show several times, or did it only happen once and it fixed in my memory indelibly?



If the latter, was this his largest Metly legacy or is it still The Curious Case of Sidd Finch?

Fireworks Plimpton was a demolitions expert in the post-World War II Army. After returning to New York from Paris, he routinely fired off fireworks at his evening parties. His enthusiasm for fireworks grew, and he was appointed Fireworks Commissioner of New York by Mayor John Lindsay, an unofficial post he held until his death. In 1975, in Bellport, Long Island, Plimpton, with Fireworks by Grucci attempted to break the record for the world's largest firework. His firework, a Roman candle named "Fat Man", weighed 720 pounds (330 kg) and was expected to rise to 1,000 feet (300 m) or more and deliver a wide starburst. When lit, the firework remained on the ground and exploded, blasting a crater 35 feet (11 m) wide and 10 feet (3.0 m) deep. A later attempt, fired at Cape Canaveral, rose approximately 50 feet (15 m) into the air and broke 700 windows in Titusville, Florida. With Felix Grucci, Plimpton competed in the 16th International Fireworks Festival in 1979 in Monte Carlo. After several problems with transporting and preparing the fireworks, Plimpton and Grucci became the first competitors from the United States to win the event. In between attempts to burn down their own facility, The St. Lucie Mets have been trying to capitalize on their strong start in the Florida State League's second half. While that has meant a soggy four wins in their last 10 contests, the team has won it's last two outings in a row, boosting them to 7-11, two and a half games out in The Florida State League South Division. Richard Pryor was right: Fire is inspirational.



Also inspirational has been Kevin Smith. The starter has taken his turn in the rotation 15 times now and returned a 3.39 ERA. His last two starts have been particularly effective, allowing only two runs total over 11 2/3 innings, striking out 15 while walking only two. After killing it in relief for Brooklyn last year the 2018 seventh-round pick out of Georgia is starting to look like somebody worth noticing.



Smith is a native Georgian, but while you're scouting down south, it's hard to find a more southern name than New Orleans' Andrew Longstreet Mitchell, but The General is more than just a name evocative of dead, corrupt aristocracy. It's the name of a future Major League reliever. (Or, you know, whatever it is you call a Mets reliever. HAH!). ALM has pitched shutout ball in nine of his last 10 appearances, a span covering 15 1/3 innings, in which he has fanned 23 and walked but 4, while compiling a 1.17 ERA over those appearances. That makes him the hottest reliever on the team not named Darwin Ramos, and it's kinda close. But Darwin has been red-hot since being promoted from Columbia, while Give-My-Regards-to-Longstreet started slowly and keeps getting better.



Do you like it hot? Hell, I know I do. And that's why I like a young catcher by the name of Mitch Ghelfi. The Mitchblade had been a defensive specialist so far this year, catching 16 of 31 would-be stealers of base, and I assume calling games and framing pitches in a manner that can bring a tear to an old man's eye. But lately? Well, lately, I'm-a-Mitch-I'm-a-Mitch-'Cuz-the-Mitch-Is-Back has been swinging the bat in a manner that makes something primal build up in your amygdala. The old part of your brain. The part that ain't for reading and reflecting, if you know what I mean.



Over his last 10 games, If-I-Were-a-Mitch-Man has gone .353 / .410 / .529 // .939, while knocking in eight runs. That's the kind of performance that has earned him the nickname "Wealfi Ghelfi."



I mean, he HAS earned it, but nobody actually calls him that.
