Dominican as a Second Language: The DSL Mets 2 in 2018

The DSL Mets achieved no small feat in 2018. Their .704 winning percentage led the circuit, and the Dominican Summer League, which bloats with a total of 40 teams, in quite the robust circuit, and hey, not every team dilutes their talent across two squads. In fact, the only team near them, with a .690 winning percentage, were the DSL Mets 1. That's a tough act to follow under any circumstances â€” and harder still if the organization is pushing their talent toward the DSL 1 squad â€” and they havenâ€™t quite gotten traction yet. A 10th-inning loss today dropped them to 5-4 two games out in the Dominican Summer League San Pedro Division.

Another year means another Latin shortstop prospect. Some years it means two. Some of them float to second or third or even center by the time they make it, and some donâ€™t make it at all. But Felix Valerio is looking like one honking good 17-year old. Playing shortstop and batting mostly out of the leadoff spot, Flex has ripped it at a .343 / .410 / .514 // .925 rate. The DSL is notoriously low power, and a 17-year old slugging .500 anywhere (he has three doubles and a homer through 8 games, not counting today) is a rarity.

You want a starting pitcher? How about Jurgen Jiminez. The first name says heâ€™s from CuraÃ§ao and the last name says heâ€™s from the Dominican, so of course, heâ€™s from Venezuela. His stat line says he has a 1.00 ERA through two starts (nine innings), but heâ€™s also 22 and in his fourth DSL season, so heâ€™s a good bet to be heading to Brooklyn or Kingsport as soon as their seasons begin. Iâ€™m guessing the latter.

Working out of the pen is Juan Martinez. Juanito has given up only one run in 5 2/3 innings, striking out 10 along the way, and holding opposing suckers to a .158 batting average. Look for him in Brooklyn soon.

But hey, Juan Martinez is something of a bullshit generic name. I hear you there. But for those Charlie Finley types who want a little lightning in a name, how about Jefferson Escorcha?! Def Jeff brings it from the portside, likes to capture a moment tastefully in black-and-white, has given up one run in 4 2/3 relief innings, and is only 18. But with a name like that, heâ€™s bound to come quick.

New manager Yucary De La Cruz is, like 27, and looks younger. I have a picture of him because he was a prospect himself, like, last week. He's got some veteran coaches to support him, but like the players, it's going to take me a bit to find photos of 'em all.

The DSL Mets 2 may have had as good a winning percentage as anybody in affiliated ball last year (I'm guessing, I haven't checked), but it hasn't been so easy this season. They're in every game, but like the big club, the offense just hasn't been showing up with nearly enough consistency. (They even got no hit earlier in the week, albeit in a seven-inning game.) This has left them dropping below .500 in the last week, but hey, their games are faster.

None of this should obscure the fact that some in this bunch can play.

Emerging at the top of the rotation is 18-year-old second-year pitcher Christofer Dominguez. Chris has already started 8 games, winning 4, losing 1, while laying down a deGromesque 1.67 ERA. Opposing hitters are batting .197 against him, which is a figure you'd usually associate with a short reliever. He capped his awesome first half by throwing 2/3 perfect innings in the DSL All-Star Game. Chris hails from Montecristi, Dominican Republic, and there's a reason he has OFER in his name.

Working like a horse out of the pen is Christito's teammate, Antonio Villaba. Tony the Horse, they call him. Or they will, once they learn English. TV is totally the second coming of Doug Sisk. Good Doug Sisk, not bad Doug Sisk. He pitches all the time (13 games) for multiple-inning stints (24 2/3 IP so far), walks people like it's no big thing (15 walks so far against 19 strikeouts), but keeps the ball down and his outfielders bored out of their MINDS (14 hits, only 4 for extra bases), holding them to slugging average of .229. FOOLS!

The offense, as tough a time as they've been having, are taking another hit with the recent promotion of catcher Wilfred Astudillo (which literally means, "Little Smart Guy," and there's nothing wrong with that) to the Gulf Coast League. The smarty-pants from Barcelona (Venezuela, not Spain), was hitting .256 when he packed his bags, but with a .371 on-base percentage, and that will play! He's also caught 6 of a 16 would-be basestealers (37.5%) and drastically improved the passed ball problem he was having as a pro rookie in 2017. He's also playing a lot of first base.

Down 5-0 and 6-1 today today to the cellar-dwelling DSL D-Backs 2, the DSL Mets 2 staged a fearsome comeback, but ultimately ran out of innings, losing 6-5. The loss dropped our heroes to 27-30, continually approaching .500 and then falling just off the pace. The loss marks their third in a row, and, typically, their fifth in their last 10. A lot of their best players have been forwarded to their DSL Mets 1 brothers, so if they are going to get back involved in the hunt, they have to look within.

With most of the best starters gone to the other squad, the bullpen has had to step up. And nobody has stepped up with quite the aplomb of Antonio Villalba. The Caracas native has appeared in 18 games so far, and there arenâ€™t just cameos. Heâ€™s totaled 35 1/3 innings in that time, and none of his appearances has been a start.

But if he ainâ€™t starting a game, Antonio is going to kick-start your heart. In those 35 2/3 innings, heâ€™s held opponents to a miserly .163 batting average. That has helped him to a 1.53 ERA. And the next homer he allows? Well, give that man a free dinner, because itâ€™ll be the first homer he allows.

Bringing the same venomous stuff from the left side is fellow Venezuelan Daniel Guzman. Danny is just behind his cousin with a .189 opponent batting average and a 1.60 ERA. I mean, both are walking too many, but neither is giving up hard contact. At all. Choose your poison right?

All the best hitters have been sent to the DSL 1 team, including the two senior catchers. But thatâ€™s just a chance for new folks to emerge, and emerging so far is 19-year-old catcher Kevin Torres. Yeah, heâ€™s only hitting a Metly .225, but heâ€™s walked 28 times already in just 41 games, so heâ€™s reaching base at a robust .359 rate. Heâ€™s also caught 31.2% of the fellow teeny-boppers whoâ€™ve tried to steal on him, and thatâ€™s not nothing.

It wonâ€™t last long if they canâ€™t beat cellar-dwelling sad sacks like the DSL D-Backs 2, but this all adds up to 27-30 record, 12 games off the pace in the Dominican Summer League San Pedro Division.

Look, Iâ€™m not going to lie to you. Jefferson Escorcha is gone. He just is. And if thatâ€™s the way itâ€™s going to be, that everybody who excels on this team is going to be transferred to the DSL 1 squad, well, that just sucks. This is what pretty much was the worst thing about baseball in the 1890s. Even more than the drunken rowdyism, the game was being destroyed by allowing owners to invest in more than one franchise in the same league. Boom â€” conflict of interest! As the season progressed, the best players from the lesser teams would be gradually transferred to the teams with the better records, and the whole thing grew demoralizing for the players and fans left behind.

I donâ€™t want to see that shit happen here. The DSL Mets 2, lest it be forgotten, had more or less the best record in affiliated baseball last year. But believe it or not, The Cleveland Spiders were good once, also! Let these guys stick with their assigned squads through the season. These guys are playing hard! Maintain some semblance of a competitive commitment to them, Mets brass!

Despite sending all their best players away midseason to become redundancies with the DSL Mets 1, the DSL Mets 2 still managed to finish 34-37 in the San Pedro Division.

Most of the best players, you've already seen in the summary for DSL 1, but it's worth while to take a second look at catcher Endy Rodriguez. Before going over to the A-team to backup, Endy was doing a Rod Carew imitation with the Deucers, going .385 / .444 / .487 // .932. Lookit that batting average! Yeah, it was only 45 plate appearances. He also caught 45% of would-be base stealers, which is something Rod Carew never did. Not bad for an 18-year-old, kid. Now go to Kingsport and do it again.

Also, we haven't seen a lot of outfielders succeeding, either in the upper levels or down her in the lower ones, but 17-year-old center- and left-fielder Eduardo Salazar had a promising season, going .354 / .413 / .402 // .815 in 92 plate appearances before (again) he was added to the Mets 1. Bloody thieves.

How about starting pitching? It couldn't be as good as the DSL 1 squad, right? Well, maybe not, but it wasn't due to Christofer Dominguez. Portsider Christofer went 5-1 with a 1.50 ERA in 48 innings, ultimately finding his way to DSL 1 AND the GCL.

You want a lefthanded reliever that can make you jump up and shout "Amen!"? Then let me introduce you to Daniel Guzman. Danny Guzzles, which is what he's called by absolutely nobody, I imagine, was damn near bloody perfect. Seventeen times he was deployed by Manager Yucary De La Cruz, and almost all those times, he came back untouched, despite usually throwing at least two innings, ultimately finishing with a 0.70 ERA in 38.1 innings.

Are you politically engaged? If so, lobby your members of Congress to pass a law disallowing an organization from packing one of their DSL teams mid-season at the expense of the other. If you're assigned to one team or the other, that should be your team until you move up to the stateside leagues.
