Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Remember Matt Winaker? Sure you do. No? Matt was the second of two Stanfordian corner outfielders taken by the Mets in last June's draft, following his fellow Cardinal Quinn Brodey. Quinn went in Round Three, and while he was celebrating, Matt called him to say he had gone in Round Five. And together they signed and reported to the Cyclones.Stocked, if not stacked, with outfielders, Brooklyn deployed Matt at first, and he put together one of the more puzzling seasons in recent memory. He walked like a fiend, garnering 15 walks in his 87 trips to the plate to go with his .268 batting average, adding up to a .402 on-base percentage. That should and would be encouraging to any minor league watcher, if not for the complete lack of power. I mean, it's like Felix Millan saw this kid and said, "Gosh, man, do a pushup or something." One extra base in 87 trips to the plate. ONE!I mean, you don't want to conclude much from 87 trips. Surely that will normalize some. And you get some quirks with a guy's first year swinging a wood bat, but ... MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 I wonder if his scouting reports said he had shown aluminum bat power in college or if they thought power would be a tool that "would develop later".We can't even call him a Punch and Judy hitter now because so far he's been all Judy.Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 30, 2017 Author Posted December 30, 2017 The thing is, I'd sign up for those numbers. And I'm all for the Mets signing Judys. Heck, there's a Judy in the Hall of Fame.
