  1. Four new questions, along with the remaining one from before, have been added below. 1. I played in a World Series And it really is a shame I hold an all time record but won't be in the Hall of Fame --originally posted by "ribant" 2. I hung with Tug and Cleon And I'm more than just a jock I kept involved in baseball As a teams primary doc --originally posted by "ribant" 3. If a biographer were a second sacker Who penned the life of Dr. Johnson Then this Amazin' was a lefty thwacker Who often batted ahead of Cleon, son... --originally posted by "Strawman" 4. In the minors I ran through the wall My only at bat as a Met was a game winning hit HoJo, a nice man, retrieved me the ball But shortly after that I no longer was a fit --originally posted by "Joe Rigatoni" 5. Some folks say I am arrogant Others say I'm ruled by greed But never before or after Will a Met have my explosive speed. --originally posted by "ribant" Running tally of correct guessers: Johnny Lunchbucket: 101 Edgy MD: 87 stevejrogers: 64 batmagadanleadoff: 31 DocTee: 9 metsmarathon: 9 Benjamin Grimm: 5 MFS62: 4 Marshmallowmilkshake: 1 Methead: 1 The Hot Corner: 1
  2. No, the hint was more referring to the enduring nature of the image, rather than the actual resemblance to the Iwo Jima image.
  3. All four are correct. If you want to go for a clean sweep, here is the hint given for #4 when the poem was originally posted: "There is a well known image of him that may be thought of as the Mets' version of the Iwo Jima photo."
  4. New questions: 1. Some people thought I was crazy After I punched out Frank Lucchesi So then I came to New York Just a few years after "The Stork" I had some pretty good wheels I set the club record for steals I hit .304 that first year But the next season's drop was severe --originally posted by "VIBaseball" 2. I was only here a little while I manned first base with my own style but it after a four base clout that I would get the fans to scream and shout I'd approach each base with a pitter patter and make my foes madder than a drunken hatter. --originally posted by "PVNICK" 3. They called me the second coming of Seaver But after one start I became a deceiver It happened at Wrigley after a snow Thanks for wrecking my elbow, Joe --originally posted by "VIBaseball" 4. I played in a World Series And it really is a shame I hold an all time record but won't be in the Hall of Fame --originally posted by "ribant" 5. Once I hit a homer Ran backwards all the while Some thought I was crazy I think I just have style --originally posted by "ribant" Running tally of correct guessers: Johnny Lunchbucket: 101 Edgy MD: 87 stevejrogers: 64 batmagadanleadoff: 27 DocTee: 9 metsmarathon: 9 Benjamin Grimm: 5 MFS62: 4 Marshmallowmilkshake: 1 Methead: 1 The Hot Corner: 1
  5. Catching up on some games. This was awful!
  6. Mets sign some fella named Nomar Meza.
  7. His contract card says August 4, 1942. They sometimes fudged the years to appear younger, but the days of birth were usually right. https://digital.la84.org/digital/collection/p17103coll3/id/118243/rec/1https://digital.la84.org/digital/collection/p17103coll3/id/118243/rec/1
  8. FINALLY. He's been tearing it up at Triple-A all year. Hopefully Mike Brosseau gets a tryout soon, too.
  9. Catching up on some games. The Mets did well!
  10. Catching up on some games. What a ho-hum experience!
  11. Catching up on some games. What a game!
  12. Back to Severino.
  13. Not just a bad pitcher, but a cheater too? Can this guy get any worse?
  14. Mike Jorgensen is correct! Answering the unanswered: 1. I wore Cleon Jones's old number I wore that number for one game in which I didn't play It was the last game I dressed as a major league player, what a bummer My major league playing career ended, I had no say Who am I? Ron Gardenhire was the official correct answer, but Terrel Hansen would have also worked. 3. Matt Harvey's big league debut was pretty elite, as he allowed no earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. At the time he did it, five other Mets had pitched 5+ innings and allowed no earned runs in their big league debuts (all made with the Mets). Can you name those other five? 1) Rick Anderson 2) Dick Rusteck 3) Tyler Yates 4) Masato Yoshii 5) Brent Gaff 4. Garrett Olson pitched for the Mets in 2012 and had a career 108.00 ERA with the team. Four other pitchers at the time had had ERAs of 18.00 or higher with the Mets. Can you name them? 1.Brent Hinchliffe 2.Tim Hamulack 3.Derek Bell 4.Todd Zeile 5. I was Bo's running buddy Once won a Cy Young But when I got to New York The fat lady had sung Dean Chance Johnny Lunchbucket: 101 Edgy MD: 87 stevejrogers: 64 batmagadanleadoff: 27 DocTee: 9 metsmarathon: 9 Benjamin Grimm: 5 MFS62: 4 Marshmallowmilkshake: 1 Methead: 1 The Hot Corner: 1 New questions will be added later.
  15. Mets release Brandon McIlwain.
  16. I've not seen too many Mets games in person, but I was at Donnie Hart's one and only Mets game in Pittsburgh.
  17. I got a little emotional when I heard the news.
  18. Vote changed to Martinez.
  19. Finishing up this one now. A quality victory and a quality hot streak.
  20. 2017 was the year I really noticed the Mets started using a TON of pitchers; It seemed like every other day, they were bringing someone new on board and rotating someone else out. And that trend seemed to continue, and continue, and continue to about 2022, when it looked like it abated a bit. Boy, was I wrong! Using Stathead, I decided to see how many pitchers the Mets used in each five-year span going back to 2006-2010. From 2017 to 2021, the Mets used 99 pitchers. From 2020 to 2024, they used 110—so far. https://i.imgur.com/iQE6ZmZ.png>
  21. I'm just being strategic. I don't think Alonso has a particularly bright future, so I think the Mets should trade him while he has value. Garrett, too. He's an illusion; his WHIP is indicative of that. McNeil is just a fluff hitter when he makes contact and his anemic batting skills are dragging the team down, though his defense seems like it's better (or, at least, flashier) this year than in years past. Martinez is, right now, doing what he was called upon to do, so as long as he's doing it, I think they should keep him. But, of course, if the Mets are competitive in five weeks I'd have to rethink my entire idea, because the goal is to win, and if they're actually winning, one would rather not alter a good thing.
  22. Martinez is playing like an All-Star, but doesn't have the statistical padding, yet, but I might change my vote later on. Severino still gets my support for now. I think the Mets could actually have more than one representative this season, Martinez and Severino, so it might be worth changing this poll to multiple choice. Marte is actually putting up numbers that might legitimize a selection, as well, but he hasn't been particularly flashy about it, so he's kind of gone under the radar. We'll see what his numbers look like at the All-Star break, too. So, my choices right now, in order, would be Severino, Martinez, Marte. Also, Lindor is currently on pace for another 25-25 season, so if he surges, he could have a case. Though I've been thrown into the pits of despair with this club, I still have the inkling that they are better than they've performed to date.
  23. Finished watching this one earlier. A quality victory. This team is so up and down, it's sending me on an emotional roller coaster! I was bullish for a long time, then I went in the complete opposite direction, but now I'm getting a little more optimistic again. I still want to see my pet group of guys traded (Alonso, McNeil, Garrett), but if the Mets push toward .500, I might actually say keep Martinez and SRF, who I've suggested trading. Martinez was brought on board to make the team competitive, and if the team is competitive then he's doing his job, so I don't see why they shouldn't keep him.
