  1. I was looking up the Mets' top prospects this morning, and I wondered if anyone knows where the top 10 or top 40 rankings are for the past few years. Better yet, does anyone know if these things are tracked? I would imagine so, because it would be very useful to understand approximately what you're trading away in trading a prospect. To be more precise than I think I need to be for this astute crowd, I'm thinking if, of the top 20 prospects of 2015, only 10 ever made the major leagues, and only 5 are stars (mixed at random, just to keep things simple), then you could see that in trading a top 20 prospect, you're losing half of a major leaguer and a quarter of a star. Simplistic, but so basic I'm thinking someone somewhere has tracked this sort of thing pretty precisely. Am I correct? If I'm wrong, are there tools for us to try it?

My ex-grandmother-in-law's first name was Raisel, the Yiddish diminutive of "Rose." I don't guess that's how he got his name. And naturally, in pointing out Frayed Knot's typo, you manage to commit one yourself, leaving out the apostrophe in Iglesias' name.
  3. =smg58 post_id=102066 time=1659494391 user_id=62] Alvarez is doing better at AAA than most people realize (a .789 OPS despite a sub-.200 BABIP is actually impressive in a good way). He'll be fine, and we'll see him before the month is out.
  4. Feels good to have a full five-man rotation healthy and firing on all cylinders, doesn't it?
  5. I was gonna say "Givens with a chance to lower his Met ERA," but maybe not.
  6. Nimmo pads his HBP record, leading off the 7th
  7. Matlack, Kranepool, Grote, Koosman, Seaver, and Harrelson is a seven-year six pack. You can probably add another one or two but I got tired of looking. Not really. Matlack debuted July 11, 1971 and Seaver was dealt off June 15, 1977, so a little under six years. Kranepool was recalled from the minors on August 14, 1970, so that's not quite seven years, either. Garrett was traded July 21, 1976, and he debuted at the beginning of 1969, so his Met run was seven and a half years, accompanied the whole way by Koosman, Grote, Seaver and Harrelson. Tug McGraw was a teammate from 1969 through 1975, six seasons. Seaver, Grote, Harrelson and McGraw lasted from 1967 through 1975, eight full seasons. Seaver, Koosman, Grote, and Harrelson lasted from late 1967 (Koosman's call-up) through the Seaver deal, nine and a half years, which is the longest Met foursome ever, I think. Also in the "not really" category is my assertion that Harrelson's debut in 1965 stuck. Nope. He spent much of the next year at AAA.

  9. Cleon Jones, Swoboda, McGraw, and Harrelson from September 1965 (Harrelson's MLB debut) through October 1970 (when Rocky was traded). A bit over five years.
  10. Lefty Specialist wrote: Ruf has played first quite a bit in his career, probably more than Canha. He also pitched an inning last year. Lifetime ERA of 18.00.

  12. I get something under 7 years, late 1986 through 1992, for Hojo, Gooden, Fernandez and Magadan.
  13. I was idly wondering this morning whether my boyhood memories of Gil Hodges managing the Mets forever, along with Weeb Ewbank being the perennial Coach of the Jets and Ralph Houk permanently managing the Yankees and Allie Sherman coaching the Giants, was simply an illusion, a distortion of time, and tried to figure out what that period of time was, exactly. I think I came pretty close but then I thought of doing with the same with four Mets teammates. Which four guys do you suppose were on the Mets' active roster together the longest? (IL or DL doesn't count as being off the roster; getting released and then sent to the minors and resigned or reinstated does.) I first thought the answer might be Seaver, Koosman Harrelson and Kranepool, but then I remembered that Kranepool got sent to the minors briefly in 1970, which would start the clock in mid-1970 and end it on June 15 1977, maybe seven seasons. So I'll substitute Grote for Kranepool-- All of 1968 through mid-1977. Anyone got a longer Mets foursome?
  14. Maybe Yoervis Medina?
  15. All these heartwarming Vin Scully stories lead me to conclude that he is a fictional character. Has anyone ever seen Vin and Scully together at the same time?
  16. 15 is Grote. To the Max.

Just when you think you can't find anyone who's less of an MLB hitter... WHAMMO Brett Phillips and his career .190/.276/.350 in almost *900* career PAs.
  18. Nice story here: https://twitter.com/tipping_pitches/status/1554677964872228869https://twitter.com/tipping_pitches/status/1554677964872228869
  19. Brett Phillips was recently DFA's by the Rays. I think the Orioles picked him up. Maybe we should have? He's a good player, especially at that price.
  20. =smg58 post_id=102106 time=1659537598 user_id=62] his 120 OPS+ is not that far below his 128 career norm.
  21. By his career standards (slash of .266/.393/.445 coming into this year), he's a little off, despite being healthy and showing off his fielding bona fides in CF, slashing .267/.347/.426 so far. I've been waiting for him to catch fire, and on August 3rd I'm still waiting. I maintain that he helps you even when his hits are going right atom and his BA is down because he walks and HBPs enough to justify batting in the leadoff spot, but that .347 is way under his usual standard, and is about middling in the starting lineup. Canha, Guillorme, McSquirl, Alonso, and Marte all have better.
  22. =seawolf17 post_id=102072 time=1659513015 user_id=91] I've always loved how our greatest highlight forever has his voice attached.
  23. I wanted to see a typical deGrom game, but I didn't mean this type of typical....

MLBN should be on your cable package if you have one. MLB.TV is downloaded via the MLB app. You'll need to sign up for it but won't have to pay for this game tonight. Cool. I'm in. Bottom of first. In case you're not aware, you can buy all NYM games for the season (minus any games blacked out in your area) from MLB.TV, or, for a higher price, buy All games (minus the same restrictions). First game I've seen on my laptop, tonight. Tell you the truth, I deliberately didn't subscribe to MLB.TV because I didn't want the temptation to sit in front of the TV every night, just catch the Marlins (and Rays, if there was an opponent I was interested in) plus ESPN games and the like. But this is a cool bonus, what with deGrom going and all.
