  1. I just was having a thought - how do we define a Hall-of-Fame closer? There are no true numerical indicators of greatness for a closer - not yet, anyway. I suspect that there will someday be a 500-save club that would be that milestone, but as of now it only has one member - Trevor Hoffman. How are we going to evaluate closers in the future? And how should we evaluate the closers of the past? Where is the dividing line between the modern era of closers and the past, and how should we consider closers from each? I personally think the modern era of the closer began in the early 1990's. How should we judge the closers of the 70's and 80's? Trevor Hoffman is likely going to be the first modern closer inducted into the Hall of Fame. Who else seems likely to join him? Rivera and Wagner stand out in my mind. But who else can we include with them? And who should we consider from the past who have been neglected?
  2. I don't even know why Biggio's even listed. He's retiring at the end of the year. And I have another idea for second base - trade for Baltimore's Brian Roberts.
  3. On an interesting note, Curtis Granderson led off the bottom of the first with an inside-the-park home run.
  4. The options at catcher look really slim. Personally, I'd prefer to get a catcher for the future. As for second base, for some weird reason I always saw Luis Castillo as our second baseman, even as far back as three years ago. However, it wouldn't hurt to platoon him with a younger guy who has power.
  5. Dumb things McCarver said yesterday: "Jose Reyes is one of the 10 best players of the last 50 years" "As they head into December..." (should have said September)
  6. Jeff Bagwell's number 5 was retired by the Astros today. This brings our co-expansionees up to eight retired numbers against our three.
  7. Tim's just completely lost it though.
  8. You'd think Rickey at least would say something.
  9. This one looks more like Glavine than the other one, but I'll guess Tom Nieto.
  10. Congratulations Jose Reyes on breaking the Mets single-season stolen base record!!!
  11. Oh lord. My grandpa, the Marlins fan, will likely carry on and get excited - he LOVES Conine.
  12. Wright and Reyes. You can't separate the two in terms of what they have meant to this ballclub. They both represent the future of this team, where this team is going. So you've gotta go with both.
  13. Well Beltran's been earning his keep recently.
  14. Carlos goes KA-BOOM-BOOM!!! Mets lead 8-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
  15. I'd take Monroe, definitely. We need a power bat off the bench. A-Hern is definitely not that.
  16. I'm in western Massachusetts until Friday... the internet is so ridiculously slow!!! Great inning though. I knew we never should have let Marlon Anderson go.
  17. And 7-5 is the final out west. The White Sox have fallen into the AL Central basement. The Royals (can you believe it???) finally escape purgatory.
  18. Mariners currently winning 7-5 against the ChiSox. Jim Thome has 2 homers for Chicago (#'s 491 & 492 for his career).
  19. I can't wait until we bring Brett Harper up (which we presumably will in September, right?)
  20. We win!!! And we gain a game over the Phillies and Braves!
  21. All right Aaron!!!
  22. Marlon is fantastic.
  23. Someone get Pedro on the phone with Oliver Twist please!
  24. Ok, who sprinkled magic dust on Mike DiFelice? Where did this bat come from all of a sudden?
