  4. And hey, it turns out Willie's a genius and Bob Melvin is the nudnick, in spite of the testimonial from John McCain.
  5. I think a bunt with no out and runners on first and second is often a good idea.

Not necessarily. Sometimes athletes, from another culture or just off the farm, are too shy to speak up. When I was living in Minnesota, Zorro Ver-sallies was a major league regular for several years before he finally let people know that he hated the nickname "Zorro," and preferred to be called by his correctly pronounced name, Zoilo Ver-SAH-yez. And right here in New York, Walter TAY-chuck was in mid-career before he let the media know his name was Ka-CHOOK. And how about Hakeem Olajuwon?
  7. John McCain at the game.
  8. On my cable (TimeWarner) TBS is blocked.
  9. Mets draw first blood as Santana sacrifice pays off.
  10. Castillo not covering himself with glory in the field.
  11. And we could be doing a lot worse than Wags... Closing time?: A lot of closers were struggling, most notably alltime saves leader Trevor Hoffman, who was said by one scout to now possess "well below average stuff.'' Other shaky closers included Joe Borowski, Lyon and Eric Gagne. Manny Corpas, an October hero last year, was already replaced as Rockies closer.
  12. And even worse: Worst Signing So Far: Andruw Jones has been nothing short of awful at the plate for the Dodgers, with a .159 batting average and 29 Ks in 88 at-bats.
  13. ...tho not much. April nonperformers April was an especially cruel month for big sluggers and pull hitters, particularly left handed ones. Ryan Howard (.172), David Ortiz (.184), Carlos Delgado (.198), Jason Giambi (.164) and Travis Hafner (the big winner at .210) were often unable to hit through exaggerated shifts and wound up with understated batting averages.
  14. Delgado - 2.5 Church - 2.0 Heilman - 1.0 Sosa - 1.0
  15. Heilman keeps 'em in it!
  16. Meanwhile, Big Brown romps home.
  17. Reyes not the same start as last night.
  18. Alou not even a day game after one night game?
  19. I was rooting for him to make 50.
  20. It's always a good omen when a game opens with a Reyes triple.
  21. The guy who had a great rep as a pitching coach who busted as manager because he couldn't handle his pitching staff...George Bamberger.
  22. Great stuff -- I don't think I can join in because I'm too tangled up in the original right now -- my freshman comp students are writing term papers on "Blood on the Tracks."
  23. There was the gag about the post-great Knick teams, when Walt Frazier was all that was left of the championship unit, where Clyde calls Red Holtzman one night and says, "Coach, this is the Captain," and Red replies, "Willis! Good to hear from you!"
  24. Original Met Gus Bell is the father of Buddy Bell, grandfather of David Bell, and grandfather of Mike Bell. He's no relation to Heath Bell, but Heath is the cousin of Drake Bell of Drake and Josh.
