Very often, advocates for number retirement may insist that it's an insult to a player to not retire his number, kind of airbrushing out what should be a meaningful honor of the team's Hall of Fame. By the same token, the increase in retired numbers as the years pass has served to downgrade even that honor, making the statue the true measure of an institutional team figure. That's the way I read the comments. Everyone being a curator has led to diminishing returns on that which is is curated.
