  1. Oh, no. I'm delighted and impressed. USA has scored in every inning. Alonso is in the lineup. McNeil has come off the bench, walked twice and scored twice. Terrific. I wish there there was a Céspedes element in the Cuba lineup, but you can't have everything.
  2. Mets pulling the pitcher and then putting him back in the next inning. I've seen hitters exit and reenter, but I can't recall ever seeing a pitcher do it.
  3. D.J. Stewart, a baseball player who doesn't golf.
  4. Mets defense totally undoing Megillicuddy here in the top of the eighth.
  5. D.J. Stewart Cycle!!
  6. I guess the operative term should be "some."
  7. Packy Naughton went to Boston Latin, first public high school in the United States. Cotton Mather graduated in the class of 1669!
  8. Megill relieving Peterson. Inneresting.
  9. Two lessons from the top of the fourth: Luis Guillorme's baserunning intuition isn't that strong. Daniel Vogelbach has shed some weight since last season.
  10. I'm getting the impression the brass don't see it the same way.
  11. The guy behind Fman in the red jacket-or-cardigan and his companion in the blue top are doing a lot of Met-inspired smooching. Good on them.
  12. And that's five runs in the first for the Fman-aided Mets, including an inning cycle — leadoff homer from Danny Mendick, a double by Luis Guillorme, two singles by Marks Cahna and Vientos after a pair of groundouts by Starling Marte and Danile Vogelbach, and a two-run triple by D.J. Stewart.
  13. That's a pretty dramatic graphic. It looks like he's announcing a title fight against Tyson Fury or a run at Rob Portman's Senate seat.
  14. Again, though, I'm not sure that Diaz hurt himself jumping up and down. It was the jumping that made it clear that he was hurt, but he looked off before that to me.
  15. Get Collin Cowgill on the line, stat!
  16. Sure, if it were a case of survival. But it's a case of culture and commerce expanding. Those players are there by choice, people are rooting for them, and guys in ties are making money. If there wasn't a WBC, there'd be something like it. It really isn't a question of WBC vs. no WBC. It's a question of WBC on which terms.
  17. =metirish post_id=120015 time=1679095146 user_id=72] A remake of the classic, but told from the German side ...
  18. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: what the WBC needs is more baseball playing nations. Let's get India and Denmark and Germany in there, a few African nations would be cool. I think a big part of the idea of the WBC is to drive interest in nations on the outside looking in. So definitely. I'm sticking with November. For most players, their season ends at the finish of September and if they're invited to join their national teams, they can spend October recovering from the season but still keeping it loose. As teams are eliminated from the playoffs, new players can join the training already in progress. I'm also behind the idea of a single host nation. For nations in or near the tropics, hopefully November would mean temperate conditions. For northern baseball-playing nations — like Japan, Canada, and The United States — that would likely mean mostly using domed facilities.
  19. Yeah, I was expecting as much. Just now, he has whatever lingering effects there are from this ... bone bruise? ... to proffer in response to any inquiries anyone might make going forward. And if that's the way he's going to slide, it's probably just as well.
  20. Lotta walks. No options. And his head sits on his neck at a funny angle. What's not to like?
  21. I tentatively agree. But I bet we don't see any steal attempts from the guy for a while.
  22. Early indications from the Mets seem to be that Megill is in the driver's seat. Mets Roster Central was thinking Peterson was out of options, but he doesn't appear to be at all, not appearing in the minors in 2021 OR 2020.
  23. Last-minute stuff in a tournament over-beholden to the moneylenders happened to my school back in the day. We were soaring through the NIT and got to the semi-final round. We were supporting the hell out of them, and that was our mistake. In the opposite side of the bracket were Notre Dame. And somebody realized that the two best draws at Madison Square Garden were Manhattan (the home team, more or less) and Notre Dame (who is the home team almost anywhere they play. So they switched the bracket and matched us up against ND in the semis. On the verge of glory, we got knocked out a round early. Uncool, but it happened even though the NIT executive director was a Manhattan College HoF alum.
  24. If you've got good selections, post 'em up. I've just made a list of what I've watched the last few months, and I'm using my randomizer to pick one every now and then and putting up a post about anything the randomizer chooses. I've become a member of a film-watching group during COVID months, and so am frequently left to yield to the choices of others. I don't want to throw my dear friends under the trailer, but this has oft led to sub-optimal results.
