Do you think that is our Opening Day top five?

https://metsinsider.mlblogs.com/rest-in-peace-sarah-seaver-e29202fc14b3Memories from Jay Horwitz.

It's just color, man. I'm not trying to make you eat anything you don't want.

If we are working from the 1960s, then I will go with Wayne Garrett 1969, who was a regular from a pretty early point in the season, if not from Opening Day. Ronald Wayne Garrett also joins George Thomas Seaver in the club of 1969 Mets who went by their middle names.

Where there is Rey, Edgardo can't be too far behind.

Edgy MD wrote: It doesn't matter what the manager had available to him. What matters is who had the best or worst lineup by some objective measure. Preliminary results are that 2004 is a leading contender for worst opening day lineup in the last 40 seasons. The 9 players in that lineup had a net 5.6 WAR in 2004 (4.0 of which belonged to Glavine); and only had 12.3 WAR collectively in the prior year. That is an excellent data capture. I wish we were able to get ZIPS projections on past seasons. Part of what I want to see is who the worst lineup was in the moment. Roberto Alomar 2002 may have been a disaster, with a 0.6 WAR, but coming off an MVP-quality 7.3-WAR season, nobody at the time would have thought he would that close to the cliff. Elliott Maddox 1979, however, in right field on opening day, was never going to be the answer in any timeline.

His name is Pete Alonso, and brother, sister, he's kind of in my third straight contract-drive year. Yogi Berra said the way to get a winning team was to get 25 guys on a one -year deal, always playing for the next contract. Yogi probably wasn't entirely serious, but yeah, maybe guys stay in shape and get in early when they're on a contract drive, but that also means they may press, and crumble under the weight of the burden on their shoulders. A little of the old Archie Bel & the Drells. Pete's in his third time around, and the first two were kinda iffy, with his batting average plummeting in 2023 and his power numbers falling off in 2024. Power is his calling card, so he's gonna want to display that, but that's all the more reason for pitchers to take advantage of his aggressiveness, and you can just see him flailing at the sliders tail out of the zone. But on the other hand, three straight walk years may mean that he is getting experienced at this salary-drive thing, so maybe he's 2025 dynamite. Your opinions are welcome. And though he unsuprisingly prospered after dropping down to such a lower level of play (1.06 ERA in 34 innings), it wasn't enough to get drafted or even to get a tumble from any organization until the Mets came calling earlier this month. So, of Tyrone Taylor, José Siri, José Azocar, and Canario, at least two are going to be squeezed out by the end of March. If everybody stays healthy, it will likely be those last two, as Taylor is coming off the best season, and Siri has the most experience and is presumed to be the best centerfielder. So, it'd be a shame if Canny is only here for a visit, but if they can somehow squeeze him through waivers, he has a great chance to provide a midseason jolt in the outfield, a la Daniel Vogelbach and DJ Stewart in recent seasons, minus the leftiness, whiteness, and mushiness. It doesn't matter what the manager had available to him. What matters is who had the best or worst lineup by some objective measure.

Well, yeah, firstly, make them the only ones who can talk to the umpire. The only ones on defense who can call for a review. Enough with managers calling the booth. If the secondbaseman says he got the tag down, and he looks his captain in the eye, let the captain decide if he has faith in his man. Secondly, every good managerial story includes two players — the veteran who is already established who players look to for authority when they don't yet know if they trust the manager, and the younger guy the manager takes extra time to pour all his wisdom into, to be the embodiment of his philosophy on the field in the years going forward. The best managers identify these players early and facilitate their authority in the clubhouse and on the field where the manager can't be. Players don't gain confidence in the fight by looking over their shoulder to see if they are proving themselves to the guy on the bench. They gain it by following captains into the fray, growing in the knowledge of which teammates they can count on and the assurance that their teammates can count on them. No manager can pick you up if you **** up in public. But a captain can. When you flourish, no attaboy! from a manager can reinforce you like the one from your captain can. Follow me and I think we're going to be alright, says the captain. Lean on each other, let the others know they can lean on you, he adds. We've trained for this! I expect no less from you than I expect from myself. Captains. With a blocky, off-font C printed on the back the cap. And when your captain is carried off the field with a high-impact injury, he stops the stretcher carriers. The batboy, having had previous instructions for just such a situation, runs onto the field with a clean, new captain's cap in a different size. And the captain calls a younger teammate to his side, whose spirit has been a rallying point for the team all year, and hands him the captain's cap, saying, Show them who you are. Get the best out of these guys. They will follow you. Cheers from the crowd. The manager stands apart. This is a players thing. Once the gauntlet is passed, the manager returns to the scrum and helps escort his wounded captain from the pitch. Captains. Drama. Action. Fun. Subtext. Narrative. Captains.

Did I take you by surprise last year? Well, I don't know why that should have happened. I've hit at every level I've played, so why not the top level? But doing it from the top of the season? Sanding off the rough edges of my defense? Working through the day-in/day-out grind for the full stretch? These are mountains I still have left to climb. If you failed to see what I was to become in the past, you have a real chance to redeem yourself by characterizing my 2025 BEFORE IT HAPPENS! You win the booby prize. I had to find out if anybody was reading. Or something.

Wait until you see the analysis of Doug Sisk's biorhythms.

There's only so much that can be understood, as there are multiple definitions of WAR, and the two main ones — from fangraphs and baseball-reference — are both built around proprietary forumlae, hidden in a secret vault guarded by shadowy figures. Both the plus and minus of WAR-ratings is that they take performances out of context and reassemble the player's performances with all situations weighted equally.

He may be coming off a largely rough season, but whatever prediction system I used to sort out these Mets players projects Brandon Nimmo for the third-most WAR on the team in the 2025, only outpaced by the two apparent MVP candidates. How about that? Such is the life of a guy who has his skill set distributed enough that he provides positive value even when he's not on top of his game. Going into the season without a clear spot in the batting order, nor even necessarily an obvious assignment on defense, you know he'll be in there, and somehow, you know he will produce. Perhaps he will produce modestly, or perhaps abundantly. Is that foot issue still a thing? Will having two MVP guys in the lineup take some heat off of him? Will he be knocked out of the top four in the lineup, and if so, will that lead him to an emotional well that he'll spend half the season climbing out of? These are the questions you must ask yourself as you consider the coming 2025 season for [CROSSOUT]Wisconsin's[/CROSSOUT] Wyoming's favorite son. I care about a captain. On my team, the role would never be unfilled, even to the point where I would make sure that on days when the regular captain isn't in the lineup, and alternate would be named, like in fútbol.

Maybe, but they somehow won in a walk, 7–1. That's a good project, though — measuring the quality of Opening Day lineups as they stood in the moment. The lineup that backed Tom Seaver in 1983 was pretty wacky, but they beat the eventual pennant-winning Phils 2-0. The Phils were old and had to shake the rust off.

I haven't seen any, but my notion is that Conclave got honors from SAG because it's a film carried by actors acting.

I predict Soto will exactly reproduce Frank Thomas' slash line of 1995 — .308 / .454 / .606 // 1.061. And what the hell — he will also match The Big Hurt's power numbers of 40 homers and 111 RBI. He will provide three or four moments — probably three — in the outfield which will suggest his future home will be at DH sooner rather than later. Alternatively, he'll make some big plays on defense too, but rather than serve as an argument that he has a long future in the outfield, it will feed the narrative that you don't want him hurting himself on defense. He will experiment with facial hair, instantly leading to speculation that the Yankees' grooming policy came up — if only passingly — in their failed negotiations with Soto's reps, and led to the Yankees reviewing this policy. The Yankees will deny all of this, but the end result will be that the notion doesn't seem that much of a stretch. In fact, the nature of their denials will be such that they actually lend credence to the theory.

This guy put up a .941 OPS over 17 big league plate appearances in 2023. That's a tiny sample size, but how do you do that and produce negative WAR? Does he play defense without a glove?

For much of 2024, it looked like Francisco Lindor — despite a soggy start to his season — was the only character that had a chance to wrest the league MVP away from Shohei Ohtani. The hope for the western hemisphere played virtually every inning of every game, and seemingly contributed every day — the little things and the big heroic things — like he just couldn't help himself. What a pleasure to watch. Then he got hurt at the worst possible time, and the Mets' post-season hopes seemed to be sidelined along with him. His return came just in time, and in Hollywood fashion, the magic returned with him. Is an encore for that even possible? Can the presence of Juan Soto take some of the heat off and maybe help him avoid another slow start? Will his starting the season in the leadoff position that triggered his 2024 revival somehow add more opportunity for him to shine? Have we seen peak Lindor? Your predictions can answer any or all of these questions. I was fortunate to go to school within the New York Mets broadcast area. And, I would guess, was pretty fortunate to have survived school while following the Mets. That said, your theory dovetails with my experience, as the guy who I noted above as somebody I missed was from my college years.

Dude was an Opening Day starter! How do you sit out Opening Day?!

We certainly have reason to think he's a good guy, but maybe there is more than we know. If I'm editing The Athletic, I'd certainly be assigning a staffer to do a deep dive on why the market for him is so cool.

The Crane Pool Forum Series that brightens up every February and March is back! Posters compete for big prizes as they try to predict the coming seasons of Mets figures! We open with Juan Soto! Juan is the defending third-place finisher for the American League MVP, having previously finished sixth, second, fifth, and ninth in previous seasons across two leagues. In fact, we really shouldn't be describing him as "defending" his finish at all, as he is no longer participating in the America League. Juan has been broadly described as MLB's best hitter, and while there are certainly other guys who one may make a case for, his consistency and health have been pretty impressive since he first came up, largely thanks to an on-base percentage that never fails to shine. The downside isn't much. He's been carrying extra weight in recent years, but as he is only 26, he probably has a few years before that starts to stick. Frequently, big names on the offensive side that the Mets have brought in — even the ones that have flourished like Carlos Beltran and Francisco Lindor — have tended to skid in their first season. But as Soto has already been through the New York adjustment, and his OBP (as noted) has tended to be slump resistant, that even though nothing is set in stone, there is little reason not to be optimistic. So, how optimistic do you want to be for Juan Soto in his first season as a Met?
