Depends on whether you count Jeter cover stories as baseball-related or whether you regard them the same way as swimsuit covers --- as a dimly related sideline for the more breathless among their readers.

Strange how Long turned in his spikes at 30. Crappy year, but he could have squeezed a few more dollars out of his career, trying to catch on here and there as a reserve outfielder.

I'm not a photographer or a layout artist or anything, but it seems like some terrible composing.

Is that them in the actual park or is that a composite?

Good catch. I'll get him lata.

I thought there was a quarterfinal going on before the semis could happen. I'll get right on this.

Gruzbt.

I worry that that team can get by with an average offense --- or even summat below average. Halladay really made a believer out of me last year.

Yeah, that shtick --- and that's a good word for it --- was out of the Randolph playbook, I think. I'm sure he'll have a private conversation with Tejada along the "Here's why I said what I said" lines. Doesn't really make it right. Here's a more positive way to answer the "Are you pissed that Player X isn't here?" question. "I've really got too much to work on with the players that are here to dwell on that. Look*, we have a mandatory reporting date for a reason. Our two rules are (1) be here on that date, and (2) be ready to work very hard. What you guys need to understand is that while players who report early should be commended, it doesn't mean players who report on the due date haven't been working their tails off up until that point. Carlos Beltran wasn't one to get to camp early, but he was there on time, and when he got there, he was a month ahead of some guys." He also would have done well --- if he insisted on contrasting Tejada's attendance with that of another player --- to cite an in-house example rather than a Yankee one. *President Obama is a master of prefacing his media redirects with a "Look... ." It has a great way of implying that somebody's got to be the reasonable adult in the room, without actually saying that.

And my position is that, in two years, there is likely to be one fewer. He may not have the injury history, but the position sure does.

I think there are plenty of decent catchers around. The Mets have one in Thole, who costs nothing. The paucity is in good ones. But wear and tear and sudden traumatic injuries have a way of reducing the good ones to merely decent (or seriously unavailable).

Kerwick shares Martino's affections for the hipster hat.

Speaking of extensions, the Cards are supposedly set to close on five years and $75 million for Yadier Molina. That's a lot of spinach. Spinach that could have fed Albert Pujols for a few years.

There are seven guys there without options, so we'll see how things unfold. Sounds like a decision on him will come later. The greater issue is the fifth outfielder. I have Kirk Nieuwenhuis in there, as I'm reluctant to put non-roster guys ahead of rostered ones, but I imagine he'll fall back in the coming weeks as one of the non-roster guys start emerging.

Holy gosh, what a difference.

"It's kind of like Mets-Yankees," Mattingly said just before the Dodgers' first full-squad workout of spring training. "The Yankees are the team. (The Mets) are going to have their years when they play well --- and, in fact, outplay the Yankees. And outdraw them. Outclass them? Sure. Especially if I'm on the field."

I'm thinking we should blow them up to poster size and carry them on the field for Banner Day. You see, it's thoughts like this that killed Banner Day.
