  1. I bet they liked that Mayday homer by Dudissima also.
  2. Toby Hyde tellin' it like it is, and letting his conscience be is guide. A hard pill to swallow if you're Egbert. Whats he doing putting on a Mets uniform? The simplest answer is that hes expendable and wont be wearing it for very long. Friday, the Mets moved Pedro Beatos rehab assignment to AAA Buffalo. He should be big league ready in a week or two. Actually, it has to be 15 Major League games. He was placed on the teams 60-day DL during spring training and will not be eligible to be activated until game #61. At that point, the Mets will need to free up a spot on the 40-man roster. Egbert would likely be the first casualty. Also, Jenrry Mejias rehab tour will be heading to Buffalo on Friday. The Mets have made perfectly plain that they expect him to relieve in the big leagues in 2012. Adding Egbert to the 40 and 25-man roster postpones some more difficult decisions by two weeks. However, at some point, the Mets might actually want to bring up a pitcher who can help a bullpen with the worst ERA (5.18) and the third-worst xFIP (3.98) in the National League. Perhaps thats Beato or Mejia, or Elvin Ramirez or maybe even Spring Training darling Josh Edgin. Its not actually Jack Egbert. A reasonable person might wonder why the Mets did not just skip the bridge step, and call up Elvin Ramirez right now. In 10.2 innings in AAA, hes allowed just three hits and a walk, struck out 12 and has not allowed a run. Those are great numbers, but its just 10.2 innings. Add in the fact that he walked seven batters in 13 innings in AA to start the season, and the team might well want to continue to see him refine his control. Also, he pitched Thursday night (like Egbert). Also, if the team were to add Ramirez to the 40-man roster now, barring another injury that necessitated a 60-man DL stint, they would essentially guarantee losing someone off the current 40-man if they re-activated Pedro Beato. And you know what, if Egbert cannot hack it before Beato is ready, Ramirez is still in AAA.
  3. 2009. Droop.
  4. Twenty-nine-year-old righthander grabbed off waivers from the White Sox. Spoting a 2.08 ERA in 17 games (one start) for Buffalo. Went to Pennsylvania's famed Mercersberg Academy, cradle of Jimmy Stewart and From New Jersey, with NYC roots. Sporting 1.7 BB/9 and 5.9 SO/9. Those figures are both lower than career norms. Apparently got married on the links. Just shut down the SWB Yankees with two scoreless, one-hit, two-strikeout innings. Would love to see him to that against the other Yankees. Josh Edgin, Jeremy Hefner, and Jack Egbert make for a lot of J's on the Mets bubble. Funny twist in his grip. Pitched in two Sox games in [crossout]1989[/crossout]2009. Looking to build on his 13 days of service time.
  5. Scarlet Knight Jack Egbert up. Robert Carson down.
  6. He hit it with the game tied, so it increased the Mets win likelihood from 86% to 100%, for a .160 WPA. The game-tying walk to Pratt that preceded that was actually a higher impact play, taking the win likelihood from 55% to 84%, for a .290 WPA.
  7. If Tom Trebelhorn was managing, he'd never let Anthony Bass pitch.
  8. Steve Henderson's homerun on June 14, 1980 was good for a .919 WPA, taking. Can any single hit in their history top that? You'd practically need a walk-off grand slam to give the Mets a one-run win: the highest WPA value hit possible. And do it with two outs. Regarding Ben's citations. 08/21/1962 Pittsburgh Pirates W 5-4 9 Marv Throneberry Roy Face Home Run, 3 rbi WPA: 0.909 06/07/1963 St. Louis Cardinals W 3-2 9 Duke Snider Diomedes Olivo Home Run, 3 rbi WPA: 0.735 06/14/1980 San Francisco Giants W 7-6 9 Steve Henderson Allen Ripley Home Run, 3 rbi WPA: 0.919 09/05/1983 Philadelphia Phillies W 6-5 9 George Foster Al Holland Home Run, 3 rbi WPA: 0.800 Steve looks like our winner.
  9. Oh, you're absolutely right, and I meant just to offer an observation. A mopup guy who enters a game down 5-1 in the fifth can secure things for a potential comeback or turn the game into a rout. Manny was a key to the Philly sweep, entering each game with the Mets down, pitching stabilizing the game and securing the opportunity for the three comebacks. More typically, he's entered a game after an early exit by the starter and brought his gasoline and matches. No doubt there was a comeback opportunity or two lost there. Last night, perhaps.
  10. 0.375. Nothing to sneeze at, but the game was already tied, and the ninth inning was still to come.
  11. I'm not sure who "we" are. Really, that chip can be surgically removed from your shoulder. I heard Dr. Boutros has done hundreds of such surgeries. Thousands.

  13. June 1981 was the beginning of a hot sticky summer, and it ended with no baseball. The Mets went 2-7, and then they went home. HRPAABHR/PAHR/ABSluggers43322951.20%1.35%Mookie (First career, and first of three on the season, off of Nino Espinosa) Kong (3, his 12th, 13th and 14th out of 22 that year.) Kingman's 22 homers were good for third in the league for the strike year. Two of those came in the eighth inning of close games The third? That came off of fellow massacre victim Tom Seaver, so you know, it was all good. He was sort of getting in gear when the strike hit. Those three homers alone added up to a WPA of .443.

  15. A coupla thoughts otg: [list:3590lpsf][*:3590lpsf]If you gotta lose to a team of suckers like the Pads, it might as well be game one of a series. [/*:m:3590lpsf] [*:3590lpsf]If you gotta lose to a team of suckers like the Pads, you might as well get some monkeys off your back by breaking a homerun slump and getting a two run hit for Ike Davis in his lone trip. [/*:m:3590lpsf] [*:3590lpsf]A big part of our pythagorean bugbear may be having a mopup pitcher with a 12 ERA rather than a five or six era. [/*:m:3590lpsf] [*:3590lpsf]Wondering how much of Hefner's crapout is going to be written off to the rain and how much is going to be hung around his neck. [/*:m:3590lpsf] [*:3590lpsf]Can't see a reason not to farm out Manny. If you believe there's something more beyond the results, great, but his as low a risk for a waiver claim now as he's ever gonna be. I suppose he could outright refuse a demotion like Ollie but so be it. The Mets have a pile of talented pitchers waiting for their chance, and can't live in fear of brinkmanship by guys throwing meatballs.[/*:m:3590lpsf][/list:u:3590lpsf]
  16. Bisons win 6-2 as the visitors in their own stadium, with the Scranton-Wilkes Barre-Nowheresville Yankees as the nominal home team. Dustin Martin, rejoining the Mets system after years in exile with the Twins as a result of the Luis Castillo trade, had two big hits. He was one of five Mets with two or more hits, actually. Matt Harvey? Effecitive in uninspiring. 5.1 IP, 103 pitches, 4 hits 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO.
  17. Or not. Thanks for ruining my streak, youse bums.
  18. Baxter leads off, pinching against a lefty. Six-run ninth coming.
  19. That's the stuff, Ike. Afraid to throw you a fastball, huh?
  20. I'm in favor of fewer regulations. What my strategy would be to do the most effective draft job within the regulations? I dunno. I imagine I'd go around offering bonuses to guys I didn't draft, totally undermine the system and get kicked out of the league for trying.
  21. And he's about 16.25% of the way through Bondy's five-year prediction.
  22. I love hearing the voices of fans who hang in there.
  23. A homer is cathartic, anyhow.
  24. Rain hurts the Hef. A lot of these hits were right off the ends of gloves too. Hard hit, though. Did the humidity break at all?
