Patrick McCarthy commenting that it is a "very, very light crowd." Yeah, that is life under occupation.

As martial law continues in the streets of America's capital, the Mets and Kodai Senga try to win game two against the host Nationals and rookie righthander Brad Lord. The Nats have stacked their lineup with lefty batters. Carlos Mendoza, on the other hand, must have been pretty happy with yesterday's performance, because he is going with the same guys in the same order, apart from swapping his bottom two. It has been a week since Starling Marte saw the inside of a starting lineup and 15 days since Tyrone Taylor had his name on the card as it is handed to the ump. In my experience, most of the bigger-ticket Nat fans down in the bowl hail from Northern Virginia.

Jeff McNeil's homerun this evening was his 78th as a Met. It breaks a tie with Robin Ventura, giving him sole possession of 27th place all-time as a Met. Mark Vientos' homerun this evening was his 46th as a Met. It breaks a tie with Donn Clendenon, and ties him with John Stearns, Dom Smith, and Jay Bruce for 47th place all-time as a Met. Juan Soto's homerun this evening was his 31st as a Met. It breaks a tie with Lenny Dykstra, and ties him with Ken Boswell for 76th place all-time as a Met. Brett Baty's homerun this evening was his 29th as a Met. It breaks a tie with Joe Christopher, and ties him with Mo Vaughn and Ty Wigginton for 796th place all-time as a Met.

And yeah, sorry-ish to ruin a perfectly lovely IGT, but I just found out that at least seven parishioners from my former parish have been taken into custody.

Available veterans floating about include Austin Barnes (released by The Giants 8/1). A consequence of ending waiver trades is teams unable to go outside the organization to replace August injured.

I ask my friends in DC to report on what is going on in our old neighborhood (very Salvadoran-American and highly concentrated with homelessness services) and they say they can only speak to me in person or on Signal ... which is chilling as fuck.

I can’t remember that. When Alvarez wasn’t hitting at all, I do remember a Torrens > Alvarez consideration, particularly given how good Torrens’ defense has been. It was a highly localized movement.

So much for the second-career shutout. But I will take the double-play.

This is probably true. A greater benefit to having teams do as much of their traveling locally as possible is likely to get away games on TV during hours palatable to home fans, and therefore get more eyes on more screens.

Blackyburny has cleared waivers and been released.

The momentum behind the Senger > Álvarez movement seems to have died out.

I think Juan Soto may turn out to be a dude someday too.

I dig any game where Baty and Vientos both homer. I still want them both to be dudes, and I still think it can happen.

First-ever MLB matchup of two Venezuelan managers. I guess that isn't counting all the times Ozzie Guillen managed against himself. Ohhhhh!

The New York Mets, champions of Williamsport, head due south to Washington DC, where our fellow Americans live under an occupation while we somehow continue on. As the Nationals sit comfortably in last place in the NL East, the Mets have released Paul Blackburn sometime between here and there, and they are apparently IL-ing Francisco Álvarez also. Hello, we are Denver. You may know us for being 1,000 miles away from and inconvenient for everybody.

This doesn't speak to expansion and realignment, but baseball is a game played in series, and a lot of the problems with the showcase games — Williamsport Classic, Rickwood Field Classic, NASCAR Classic, Hall of Fame Game, Field of Dreams Classic, Civil Rights Game, Post Raisin Bran Classic, Hubert H. Humphrey Showcase, Scooby-Doo Classic — could be smoothed out if they instead scheduled a three-game series.

I think it is clear too, but I am dubious about its phiosophical grounding. If you think hard enough about it, there's a reason to curtail any starter's workload. Then you start wringing your hands that you are asking your relievers to carry too much. So you start scheming to curtail their workloads, somehow not realizing that you are robbing Peter to pay Paul. The games are going to still have nine innings, and if you want to win, you are going to want effective pitchers out there to help you win. At the same time, you are programmed to protect those pitchers so you can win some other contest at some unspecified future point. But it is a zero-sum game.

I would like to add, there is nothing special about 100. We have come to see anything over 100 as living on borrowed time, but it ain't. At least, it ain't necessarily.

Good analysis. Agreed on most accounts.

I thought it almost certainly had to have touched the ground as he rolled, based on how the ball is exposed, but in slow motion, it seems to remain balanced on the inside of his left leg as his right leg closed on it. The question to me was whether it was pinned between his legs (control) before it touched the ground, or whether the ground forced it in there. I thought not, but on further viewing, if I am in the replay booth in Chelsea, I have to give it to him.
