We haven't taken the official temperature on deals this offseason. We ought. [fimg=500:ea0puu0q]http://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/jerry-blevins.jpg[/fimg:ea0puu0q]

Hurry, let's chat about De Aza before it's too late

I like Kirk as much as anyone, maybe more, but he's a hard thing to have to rely on and the Mets already demonstrated once they had the nads to let him go. It'll probably be Ceciliani who gets dropped initially anyhow. Barring injuries, though, Nieuwenhuis will be set up to find himself in a pinch come opening day. -

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Who could forget his walkoff triple against the yankees? A walkoff triple. That's hard to do! The implication is that he reached third before the runner ahead of him scored. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: You know who's gonna love this move? Addison Reed, that's who! Jon Niese must be feeling a little stupid right now. -
I meant to mention this in the post, but Kingman turned 67 yesterday. I want to someday co-write a paper on Kingman, looking at his career from a psychological standpoint. There's something about the psyche of giants (lower-case g) that they're damned for doing what their good at and damned for not doing what they aren't good at. The world can be to them like Curley in Of Mice and Men, picking fights with them that they just can't win even when they win. It can get them screwed up and getting in their own way. He, Strawberry, and Duda all have had their own ways of adapting to being the biggest guy on the bus. They've adopted differing mindsets of (speculatively) varying levels of emotional health, but all seemingly got crossed up to one degree or another along the way.

I think he'll be used more if he performs well, and less if he performs poorly. And gets Mayberried if he goes a 2-for-June or something like. -
1970s Baseball gives us 20 facts you may not know about Dave Kingman. The Daily Stache talks with knuckleballing prospect/suspect Mickey Jannis. And going back to October, Cardboard Gods looks at the Mets, the Royals, Bret Saberhagen, Ron Hodges, and everything.

•Jon Heyman: "Plan is to share CF with Lagares" •Mike Puma: "Mets had concerns about Span's health and signability. Didn't want to go multiple years with Span or Parra" •Joel Sherman: "Signing of De Aza is another blow to the notion of Mets bringing back Cespedes" The Mets beat, everybody. -

Always seemed to me like some letters had fallen off his jersey, and he just got stuck with that name. -
He's done plenty of hockey and basketball. I think he'd be unemployed for about a minute if he walked away from the Mets.

Seems to be some anxiety about it being 12/20 with SNY having not yet tied him down with a new contract. It's amazing how it gets like this every contract, seemingly because Keith is detached enough that he can walk away. Ron and Gary are the ones with negotiating leverage, because they have other irons on the fire. It's like Keith just plays hardball because he's Keith.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Crazy right? The Yankees would make a better decision promoting 3rd-base coach Buck Showalter. And the White Sox did all right with Gene Lamont, who'd "win" the division in '94. Interesting thing about Showalter is that he wasn't promoted, so much as re-hired. He and the rest of the staff got fired weeks before along with Merrill. This was during the Nederlander Interregnum and then-GM Gene Michael has admitted he was grabbing at straws with uncertainty as to who he was answering to and who set his budget.

Star Wars, Episode 7 The Force Awakens (2015) [SPOILERS]
Edgy MD replied to Elster88's topic in Film Review Forum
This is a three-year-old thread. Wow. We need a poll. -
Like Art Howe, he was hired right out of another job, where his team had been consistently winning. What could be safer? D'oh! Fun fact: In 2002, Torborg was fired from his job as Miami skipper, with a 16-22 record. His replacement, Jack McKeon, took them to a world championship the next season. This season, Marlins manager Mike Redmond was also fired with a 16-22 record. Not-So-Fun Fact: When Toborg went, his pitching coach Brad Arnsberg went with him. He became so incensed at the news that then-GM Larry Beinfest said he and owner Jeffrey Loria left/fled his home 90 seconds after delivering the news, describing him as abusive and borderline violent, and barring him from coming by the park the next day to pick up his stuff. Funky Fact: Also fired that day was Torborg's son Dale, who served as strength and conditioning coach. As previously observed in this space, Dale Torborg had previously wrestled professionally under the name "The Demon," licensed/hired by KISS, Inc. to take the ring in full Gene Simmons makeup. I think lying somewhere among Harrelson was better than his reputation suggests; Torborg was worse than we could have possibly expected; and the talent fell off a cliff just as they were transitioning from one to the other is the likely truth, that the burst of success in Harrelson's first year was the last gallon of gas the 1980s Mets had in 'em. Firing the manager wasn't going to change that, and Harrelson's shocking losing record in in 1991 probably shouldn't have been hung totally on him so much as the trajectory the team was heading no matter what.
-
He wore turtlenecks. And he continued the Mets managers tradition of endorsing whoever their credit card sponsor was, doing a commercial that said, "You know, wometimes I wish I could use my Manufacturers Hanover Visa (or whatever) just to buy a run." (ba-dum, ching)

Ricco: It's Zobrist or dick for us this winter
Edgy MD replied to Centerfield's topic in New York Mets Talk
If that's their strategy, as it seemingly is, the team is putting a lot of pressure on themselves to tie up these pitchers past their arbitration years. Perhaps when Bryce Harper hits the market in 2019, we're going to see a $40 million-a-year guy. -
2013 Splits vs RHB: .362 / .507 / .448 // .955 vs LHB: .174 / .244 / .223 // .468 That's about as Splitsville as you can get. Somewhere there's a Met scout (or a then-Met scout) who recommended him. Good for him. I remember him drawing so little attention during the spring in 2013 that Frayed Knot posted the opening day roster and shrugged, writing something like, "I'm going to have do some reading up on this Scott Rice character." After six weeks or whatever, none of us had a clue. I remember he got hurt down the stretch in 2013, and Terry had in his bullpen at one time three generations of Mets LOOGys — Rice, Byrdak, and Feliciano — all of them nursing tender wings and getting no more than one or maybe two batters or so per appearance. It's a tough job, kids.
-
Well, it doesn't matter, as the deal is reportedly off. Nats supposedly looking at Howie Kendrick now. Daniel Murphy seeing a lack of affection.
-
Erstwhile lefty specialist Scott Rice has been signed away by Arizona. He, uh, wore 56. Didn't succeed a whole lot more than Andrés Torres in it, but he had his moments. Even before he got hurt, he seemed to throw profoundly slow. Even by lefty junk specialist standards.
-
And ultimately, sure as the sun is gonna rise, the DFA ghost comes calling on the third-string catcher. I'm surprised it took this long. One more chip lost from the minor league free agent pile too. I didn't and don't "gloat." For Christ's sake. I'm going to go stand in traffic.
-
You haven't seen me gloat. Curmudgeon isn't a word I'd use. Lawyer is, in that you'll inexhaustibly argue a tenuous point to try to win through an obscuring volume of assertions, hoping somehow your exhausted partners in conversation won't see where in the smokescreen you've subtly changed their position and wiggled yours. But I do. Because I'm not as stupid as you seemingly hope. Even if I am as exhausted and demoralized as you might hope. Simple point: Yes, the Mets did have alternative plans to aquiring Zobrist. Of course they did. It's the least controversial thing in the world.

No, I have not forgotten my position.
