I believe in psychology more than anybody. But I think we sometimes create a psychological block by our own deference to psychology. If it's not the team's best defensive alignment, but he's comfortable there, leave him. If having Conforto at the top of the lineup but the likes of Walker or Granderson batting cleanup, but Conforto is comfortable, leave it be. But maybe it's the discomfort the manager has with moving guys in deference to their pysches, that projects discomfort within their psyches. One day in the clubhouse of the Tidewater Tides, Davey Johnson didn't post a lineup. He just drew the guys on the chalkboard at their defensive positions. The players asked him what gives, and he said he was so confident that the team would win that day, that the lineup didn't matter. And then he invited the starting players to step forward and draw a number from a hat, and that would be their position in the batting order. From that, you can conclude that batting order doesn't really matter strategically, but you can also conclude that moving players to what what you see as the best alignment in the batting order (and on defense) shouldn't really matter psychologically, if you project the right attitude. Earl Weaver, by the way, didn't work out Cal Ripken at shortstop. He just wrote Ripken's name in the lineup over there. Ripken walked into his office and asked him about it, and Weaver told him "Just stay within yourself and you'll be fine."

Yo, tambien. AC/DC is a band that should never be shot in hi-def. They were born for grainy super-8. Look for Wilmer's return. Gary speculates he'll be at second with T.J. remaining at first, but I don't see any reason it shouldn't be the other way around, save for some sort of inertia that has caused a week of firstbasing to imprint upon T.J. that he is, somehow now a firstbaseman, first and foremost, until crisis forces the manager's hand.

Remaining citizens of the interstate: José Reyes is churning across Pennsylvania toward the Chemung-Tioga County line on I-86. Wilmer Flores, Kevin Plawecki, and Matt Reynolds are all searching the Midwest (Michigan, Indiana, and Western Kentucky, respectively) for the mythical I-67. Hopefully finally getting his car firing on at least two cylinders is Curtis Granderson, sputtering across Texas on I-37, asking if anybody's going to San Antone.

The following Met-like dudes have exited April with 0.00 ERAs: Anthony Dimino in 1.0 innings, while otherwise being employed as a catcher for St. Lucie. Jeff Diehl in 1.1 innings (2 games), while otherwise being employed as an outfielder for St. Lucie. Kyle Regnault in 8.2 innings, 2.0 in AAA and 6.2 in AA. Tim Peterson in 11.2 innings, all in AA. Alberto Baldodado in 13.2 innings, all in AA. Tyler Pill in 29.1 innings, 19.0 in AAA and 10.1 in AA.

And the Cubs take down the Phils. The Mets started the day in last place and finish within a half game of second.

Yes, you've made yourself clear.

Nice to see Wilmer activated today, a day earlier than I expected. Also good to see the ratio of pitchers to hitter tilt a little more toward the lumber side of the ledger. Left-center getting a lot of action. Let's go for 23.

Now that Reyes is hitting consistently, do you still keep Conforto stapled in that leadoff spot?

Metropulos? Twinkies? Two sons? That guy should be buying the Twins.

Whoah, Reyes bails out the Mets bigly.

We've ripped a dozen balls right at Freeman playing on the bag or the line in this series.

Yeah, I guess I'm OK seeing the bats bail out the arms for a bit.

Sherlock should have been further down the line.

Trivia answer: Al Leiter.

RBI double. God bless this thread.

"About what time, Keith, do you start to get concerned about Granderson?" About three weeks ago, Gar.

Feels like a last stand for Grandy. Like when they hit a dude in the middle of the lineup just before they cut his head off. Terry has played it like that in the past. Makes me absolutely crazy. From the Tejada play to the Suzuki HBP last night. Terry has got to come out and throw a fit when this happens. Sure, it may not do much, but I think it helps morale. Picks a team up. Helps change the mood from "Woe is me" to "Fuck these guys man". I think if you make a good case, it morally tilts the ump in your favor. Next time there's an ambiguous situation, in the back of the ump's mind is, "I've been really screwing the Mets recently, and I kind of owe them one." The next guy that's even remotely out of the box when the catcher is throwing is going to get called for it. And the other team knows it and will play just a little bit more on their heels, and the Mets' catchers will throw with just a little bit more confidence, knowing that the box belongs to them and them alone.

His command did not look like him at all. Nor did his motion. Meanwhile, Dickey's command was non-existent. His ball had movement, but he was clearly laboring out there and wasn't close to spotting anything, resorting to throwing first-pitch fastballs to try and get ahead by the third. The Mets should've stood there and forced him to throw strikes and let him sink himself. I realize the book goes out the window with a knuckleballer, but ...

I also have to think you come out of the dugout and argue for your player when a batter so indifferently interferes with him like that and gets him injured.

I never understood "You can't make this up." Sure you can. It happens all the time.

And the skinny guy is the only one getting it done. #BarwisMethods
