  1. Flashing back to http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2014/11/17/seaver-at-seventy/Seaver at 70.
  2. I didn't gloss anything over. I thought I stated things pretty factually.

  6. Porky and Wacha were originally slotted in as 5th-to-7th options, of course. But the team did more than lose Wheeler. Syndergaard's elbow blew, Stroman's commitment blew, and Matz' pitching blew. Attrition is part of the game, and that's why you build redundancy on the back. Are OD and Morty better options now than Wacha and Porcello were last year? I confess that I do not know. Obviously, the key is to keep your soldiers on the field, and have a redundancy of backups when you can't. It's rough to recruit particularly good veterans for slots that may not be available, because better veterans get MLB contracts, so you have to carry them in the bullpen if a slot doesn't open. I think a key is also building redundancy through the up-and-comers, and lacking a AAA team, it was a really shit year to be a guy on the bubble. Hopefully, if there is AAA ball this year, in addition to veterans with big league and minor league contracts, they could call on Kilome, Szapucki, Jurado (already on the 40), and/or Harol Gonzalez in addition to guys passing through, and those guys won't be coming in cold.
  7. Sergio needs a SABR bio.
  8. No offense to the rookies, but that's not a strong class of first-year guys, which leads me to conclude a swell of support for legacy candidacies, which would seemingly put juiceboxes Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds over the bar.
  9. In other words, we've improbably had a more enduring career than our namesake.
  10. I've met him in the flesh several times. (Six?) Once or twice with you there. Me and the dog get along fine to this day, except here. I dunno.
  11. My idea. I pitched it to Doc and we spitballed who we wanted to invite over.
  12. I just got the idea that having two infielders and needing one for the outfield, they believed that McNelt was better able to fake it there than Davis. No, McNeil wasn't good there, but it was nine games total. I think his history and skill set suggest he'd settle in better if that became his regular assignment. In the meantime, Davis sports more of the left-side-of-the-infield arm, and McNeil has shown himself to be an able flycatcher.
  13. Sorry. I got 'fused about which thread I was rocking. I'll bounce it over.
  14. Pete Alonso's favorite she-bear, fiancée Haley Walsh, wears her colors with honor, and stays away from the black that he seems so irrationally fond of. 15. No, it isn't great, but it's strong And a good cover photo. Got my vote. Looks like I'm the only one who went with OUTTA HERE which makes good use of the Former Great Wall of Flushing as a backdrop, along with a headline that applies to two different ledes. That's a good day for the back-page editor. Everybody change your votes and agree with me.
  16. For what it's worth, Syndergaard is tweeting highly sexualized video of him all greased up throwing from the mound.
  17. Recent starting pitcher names the Mets have been reported to be in contact with include Charlie Morton and Jake Odorizzi. Now, I know that sounds like Wacha-Porcello 2.0, but that's only because that's exactly what it sounds like. Whether the team is looking at them as potential 4-5 starters or potential 8-9 competitors, I dunno. Probably just gauging the marketplace. There's an argument for both, but obviously not the strongest of arguments. As a 37-year-old with local connections (both Connecticut and New Jersey), Morton is very much the type of guy that would take a his final lap with the Mets under the last regime. In fact, if the Mets sign him, I'm just gonna call him Jake Catalanotto until somebody corrects me.
  18. https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/mlb-eliminates-dues-for-minor-leaguers-changes-clubbies-responsibilities-in-new-proposal/Baseball America has announced an end to one of the most anachronistic and coercive parts of the baseball economy, professionalizing the role of "clubbie," while relieving players (in the majors and the minors) of the burden of paying the clubhouse managers out of pocket through a "dues" system, traditionally a killer expense for minor leaguers who are already bobbing on the poverty line and having to stretch their dollars just to get their calories. A concession of any sort to minor league players is a big deal, especially as the industry is hemorrhaging jobs, so hopefully this means that rumors and feints at organizing has led to players starting to get a little juice.
  19. I find myself going for composition over photos or headlines or good or bad puns, and The Daily News gets me on most days. They use every inch of space but somehow don't sacrifice coherence.
  20. He declared an intention to win a championship in three-five years. That's fine, but isn't that just setting a low bar? You may want to fully transform the organization into your vision in five years, but you're not starting from scratch, here. In fact, the guy you're giving the ropes to initially here, is the guy who put most of your human assets in place. Anyhow, in three to five years, my goal is three to five championships.
  21. Sure it is. And I write as much up top. If I'm a manager, the goal would be that all my batters were regulars, starting 60-70% of the time. But I puked up this thread knowing that teams tend to thin out areas of extra redundancy, trying to improve areas where redundancy is absent.
  22. What's the deal with five-year plans?
  23. Big Krane was hitting .412 following a 3-4 day and the lone RBI in a 1-0 win in a June 4 win over Houston. Jerry Koosman went the distance for the win in a cool two hours and 12 minutes. On June 5, presumably as Gallo was drawing this, Ed went 0-3 with an intentional walk and his average fell to .398. On June 6, the day the cartoon ran, he followed up with an 0-4, falling to .379. He would rebound as high as .385 a few days later, but no higher, and would end the season with a career-best .323 average. No one since has been able to explain the mystifying Curse of Gallo.
  24. Foster was a champ at surviving. He outlived three heart surgeries, two knee replacements, and a bout with colon cancer. He was the Jerry Lee Lewis of the Giants.
  25. Killer.
