  1. What was the time on that replay review? Seemed like four or five minutes. Why is it that the (supposed) rules of procedure always seem to get suspended when Mattingly is managing?
  2. Well, thanks to a couple of blowouts [12-0 Dodgers, 7-0 Rockies - both in the 6th] we're almost certainly seeing an NL West champion/WC game tomorrow The game will be in LA and the loser will need to get on a plane right afterward for either Milwaukee or Chicago who will host Tuesday's WC game whoever the Central WC team wind up being. Things are still a bit more up in the air in the Central where the Cubs and Brewers are sporting 2 and 3 run leads
  3. Mets not only winning the game (a 1-0 thriller heading for the 7th) but, seeing as how this game is furthest along of all the simultaneously starting games, they're also 'winning' the race to finish the season first.
  4. Perhaps he should have bunted. Would have been better had he taken the field for Top 2nd then get pulled after one batter or something but, as Howard Cosell said when asked to comment on Vince Lombardi's death, "It was inevitable".
  5. JdG probably didn't "prepare" himself for an outing over the last couple days, so not him.
  6. I think this is the end of the line for Reyes, certainly as a Met and quite likely as a ballplayer. He's a speed guy who's no longer the best option at SS, who will turn 36 next June and is coming off a year where he hit under .200 with a pop-up rate that seems like it was over 50% He was a worthwhile pickup in 2016 but then less so last season and, while it would be nice to think that he had a hand in Rosario's maturing this year, if so it's about his only one. Turn the page.
  7. Nice potential for a double play-in game situation on Monday with the Cubs & Brewers tied for 1st place in the NL Central and the Rox & Dodgers atop the West. All four teams are in the post-season but, thanks to an actual meaningful distinction in winning the division vs just the WC, a tie in either case will require a Game #163 and there could be two. The potential Dodger/Rockies game would be at 4:00 (EDT) on Monday while the Cubs/Brewers match will be at 1:00 if both games are needed, but will move to a 4:00 start if it's the stand-alone contest Rox are at home today but may have to face Max Scherzer (or maybe Erik Fedde, there seems to be some indecision there still) The Giants have blown two chances at home to deal a serious blow to their rivals but have one final shot today: Andrew Suarez vs Rich Hill In Chicago, it's Mike Montgomery for the Cubs against the Cards' Jack Flaherty Milwaukee, which has put themselves in early 3-0 holes for two days in a row against the lowly Tigers, goes with deadline pickup Gio Gonzalez against rookie Spencer Turnbull making his 3rd ever ML start And the NL starts first this year so the actual WC game is slotted for Tuesday night, so a quick turn-around for the survivors here.
  8. I hope this guy has a long career and is booed in Queens until he retires. Not because he did anything wrong but because it'll be funny.
  9. The cameraman filming the Gelbs/Cuddyer interview was trying his hardest to keep the dark-haired camera whore out of the shot. He kept making slight movements to keep Cuddyer's (even grayer) head in her way.
  10. Not surprisingly, the Dodgers & Giants are taking their final series very series-ously despite SFG being long out of things. First the Giants held back Madison Bumgarner for two days so he could pitch Friday night's game vs LAD. Nice try but it didn't work as the Dodgers got him for 3 runs and 2 HRs in an eventual 3-1 win. That win means the Dodgers will at least play past Sunday as the worst they can do is fall into a play-in game (w/StL) in order to determine who advances to the WC play-in game (vs MILW/CHIC) Today the Dodgers had Kershaw going but that hasn't worked well either. Even after given an early lead (LAD led off 1st & 2nd w/HRs) it was 5-5 after six And the Giants just brought closer Mark Melancon into the game in order to try and snuff a bases-loaded/two-out Dodger rally in the 7th. It's the right move of course (why wait until the 9th?) but, let's face it, it's not a move we often see. ... AND PH'er DAVID FREESE LINES OUT TO END THE INNING Bottom 7, 5-5, in the city by the bay. I wonder if the stadium is playing Marty Balin tunes between innings?
  11. The actual lineup the last time Reyes & Wright were in the same starting lineup (9/28/11): SS - Jose Reyes 2B - Ruben Tejada LF - Willie Harris 3B - David Wright 1B - Nick Evans RF - Mike Baxter C - Ronny Paulino CF - Jason Pridie P - Miguel Batista Some guy named Justin Turner pinch-ran for Reyes after his (in)famous lead-off / bunt base-hit / quick-exit. Turner would stay in the game at 2nd w/Tejada moving over to SS Josh Satin later pinch-ran for Wright and played 3rd for the remainder of the game. Evans & Baxter drove in the runs in the 3-0 NYM victory. The 2R HR by Baxter was the first of his career ... there would be three more. Batista pitched a complete game two-hit shutout. He'd only start five more games in his career (not surprising seeing as how he was already 40 y/o at this point)

Maybe it would have gotten them brought up on copyright infringement if they had, but they missed a great opportunity to call it McArthur Park. Think of the possibilities! -- melting in the dark night; a cake placed out on 2nd base during rain delays; guest appearances by Jimmie Webb and/or Richard Harris.

  16. Brewers & Cubs both clinch playoff spots, NLC still to be decided with the Cubs holding a slim 1/2 game lead. Rox win, Dodgers lose, Cards lose, so Rox take over West by 1/2 game. LAD leads Cards by a full game for WC #2 The networks would hate it, but I'd be up for seeing either/or of the Cubs & Dodgers sit out the post-, and/or see them have to fight each other in the WC play-in game in order to advance. Mets, btw, are 4.0 games in back of Philly with 4 to play so we could theoretically catch them (and "win" 3rd place with head-to-head as a tie-breaker) as the now sub-.500 Phils are in the midst of a serious September crash (6-18 following a 13-14 August.
  17. MFS62 wrote: A co-worker told me today he read that if the Mets had scored four runs a game for him, he would have been 30-0 and if they'd scored three runs per game, he would have been 20-5. He didn't say where he saw that, and realized that at least in some of those games, he would have been replaced by a reliever who would have blown the lead. I guess those were "coulds" instead of "woulds". But still, that is amazing. Later Yeah, that's not quite accurate (see my post in the 'Blasphemers' thread) as deGrom didn't even last the required 5 innings in two different starts this season so there's no way he could have won those. I got him as 21-1 w/10 No decisions in his starts although even that is assuming that the game situation doesn't change after he left the game (ie. no blown games by the pen)
  18. Whilst he was in the midst of throwing a gem, Jack had one of his records tied tonight as Colorado's German Marquez began his game by striking out the first eight Phillies of the game. That ties the post-1900 record held by deGrom (2014) and also Jim Deshaies (1986) deGrom, you may recall, had his streak broken by allowing a hit to the opposing pitcher. Marquez tonight got a soft come-backer from the #9 hitter (Pivetta), and promptly threw it away for an error.
  19. Dear Seth, I like you. I really do and I hope you have a great future with the Mets. But if you EVER want to show your face in New York City again you CAN NOT let this game get away. Yours Truly, FK

  21. Besides ... he leads off and might be the best hitter in our lineup.
  22. 17 in a row, 8 Ks, a 1-0 lead, 7 innings worth of outs with ~6-1/3 innings worth of pitches, in his final meaningful start until April ... don't you DARE take him out Mickey!
  23. NOW Jackson is bunting?!?!?
  24. So that's scored as a K, plus a passed ball, and then a 4-3 putout ... I guess It would be a weird play in which to lose a perfect game but lose it you would since the batter reached 1st base safely.
  25. Brandon hitting 'pre-leadoff' !!
