  5. Mets hire former NYPD commish Keechant Sewell for newly created public safety role: ‘Dream job' Former NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell has been hired by the New York Mets for a newly created public safety role, her first-ever private-sector job, the team announced Thursday. Sewell, 51, will join the organization on Nov. 27 as its first senior vice president of security and guest experience. The new gig comes after she suddenly resigned as the Big Apple's top cop in June after a year-and-a-half at the helm of the largest police force in the nation. “The NYPD's loss is certainly Citi Field's gain,” a retired NYPD detective told The Post. Keechant Sewell is a smart, no-nonsense leader who will undoubtedly surpass the expectations of those who hired her.” Sewell, working under Mets' Executive Vice President of Ballpark Operations and Experience Katie Haas, will oversee the safety and fan experience for the organization, the Mets said. “Keechant will help us to modernize our approach to safety and the guest experience at Citi Field, while also strengthening our relationships with the community and all agencies of law enforcement and emergency services,” Haas said in a press release. Sewell said she is excited to join the Mets in her first role in the private sector after a lifelong career in law enforcement. “The opportunity to bring my passions of community building and public safety to the Mets is truly a dream job,” she said in a statement. “As someone who grew up in Queens, this legendary organization is vital to local communities and so many across the world. I can't wait to help be a part of building this world-class fan experience.” A source close to Sewell told The Post that the hire “makes sense” for Sewell. “The Mets are very involved in the Widows and Children's Foundation,” they said, referring to the Police Benevolent Association fund that assists widows and children of fallen NYPD officers. “It's a dream job.” A 22-year veteran of the Nassau County Police Department, Sewell spent most of her career policing on Long Island before Mayor Eric Adams hired her as the 45th NYPD commissioner — the first woman to hold the powerful position. During Sewell's tenure, the Big Apple saw a drop in shootings despite an overall uptick in crime in the five boroughs, according to department data. Her resignation, which blindsided the mayor, came after Sewell felt she had her hands tied making promotional decisions within her department, which, unlike previous commissioners, she had to run past City Hall, law enforcement sources told The Post. Edward Caban, who had previously served as the first deputy police commissioner under Sewell, was named new head of the department in July. https://nypost.com/2023/11/02/metro/mets-hire-ex-nypd-boss-keechant-sewell-for-new-public-safety-gig/https://nypost.com/2023/11/02/metro/mets-hire-ex-nypd-boss-keechant-sewell-for-new-public-safety-gig/

  12. No surprise z record low ratings ( game 1) Despite a dramatic finish, Game 1 of the 2023 World Series between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers was the least-watched World Series Game 1 on record. Here's what you need to know: The game — which the Rangers won 6-5 after Adolis García's walk-off homer in the 11th inning — averaged 9.172 million viewers on Fox and an additional 182,000 on Fox Deportes. It also averaged a 4.6 rating, another low, according to Sports Media Watch, which lists the prior lows as a 5.1 rating and 9.35 million viewers for Game 1 of the 2020 World Series between the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers during the pandemic-impacted season. The series is tied 1-1 as the Diamondbacks host the Rangers in Game 3 on Monday. Why so low? This series was always going to be viewership challenged — as anyone who studies or writes about sports viewership would have told you prior to first pitch. The question was how low would the numbers be. These numbers are low. You can't spin them. Because fans too often personalize this stuff, it's important to note this isn't an attack on either team. It's actually a fascinating baseball matchup. But the Diamondbacks and Rangers are not national draws based on historic television data outside of when they are playing a team with broad appeal or a series going long (which is what Fox has to really hope for with this series). One thing that definitely impacted this viewership: Game 1 was played on a Friday, which is one of the least-watched days of the week on linear television. Fox is going to point to Game 1 winning primetime among all programs but this is always true and they pay a lot for it to be true. For context, as Austin Karp of Sports Business Journal pointed out, the viewership was slightly below Colorado-Colorado State football on ESPN (9.3 million viewers) and on par with the Los Angeles Rams-Cincinnati Bengals “Monday Night Football” game last month (9 million). Where this stuff really becomes eye-opening is when you compare the 2023 Game 1 viewership to recent Game 1 history not involving big viewership teams such as the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, etc. Take Game 1 of the 2011 World Series between the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals. That game drew 16.5 million viewers. If you go back nine years earlier, Game 1 between the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Angels drew 19.26 million viewers. Again, if you are Fox and MLB, you are really hoping for series length here. — Richard Deitsch, sports media senior writer https://theathletic.com/5014822/2023/10/30/world-series-game-1-viewership?source=user-shared-articlehttps://theathletic.com/5014822/2023/10/30/world-series-game-1-viewership?source=user-shared-article
  13. From the NY Times A humble muscleman well liked by teammates and friendly to fans, Howard could laugh at his failings. He once told how the great hitter Ted Williams, who became the Senators' manager in 1969, helped him show more patience at the plate. Still, Williams couldn't contain his frustration. “Somebody was explaining to a visitor that some of the outfield seats in R.F.K. Stadium had been painted white to mark where some of my long home runs had landed,” Howard told The New York Times in 1981. “Ted turned to the guy and said, ‘All the green seats are for the times he struck out.'” Great stuff Frank Howard, Towering Slugger Whose Homers Were, Too, Dies at 87 https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/30/sports/baseball/frank-howard-dead.html?smid=nytcore-android-sharehttps://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/30/sports/baseball/frank-howard-dead.html?smid=nytcore-android-share
