  3. Fascinating article by Neyer, is this Japanese pitcher going to pitch over here any time soon?
  4. Tavarez is a bit of a wanker, especially after he plunked Piazza when he got back from injury this season, and no way on a four year deal, Boras is full of BS. You can expect to see lots of this if the Mets sign him....hey and look, it Roger Cedano..
  5. Bill Mueller signs with the Dodgers for two years to play 3B.

  9. Well the WBC just entered the polictical field...this is bullshit.. ] U.S. bans Cuba from Classic THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Cuba won't be allowed to send a team to next year's inaugural World Baseball Classic, the U.S. government told event organizers Wednesday. The decision by the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control was conveyed to Major League Baseball on Wednesday, according to Pat Courtney, a spokesman for the commissioner's office. A permit from OFAC is necessary because of U.S. laws governing certain commercial transactions with Fidel Castro's communist island nation. Paul Archey, the senior vice president of Major League Baseball International, and Gene Orza, the chief operating officer of the Major League Baseball Players Association, issued a joint statement saying the organizers would try to have the decision reversed. The commissioner's office and the union have jointly organized the 16-team tournament, which runs from March 3-20 in the United States, Puerto Rico and Japan. "We are very disappointed with the government's decision to deny the participation of a team from Cuba in the World Baseball Classic," Archey and Orza said. "We will continue to work within appropriate channels in an attempt to address the government's concerns and will not announce a replacement unless and until that effort fails." In Cuba, top sports officials met late Wednesday to discuss the issue, but no statement was immediately issued. Organizers had said the Cuban team likely would have included only players currently residing in Cuba and not defectors such as Jose Contreras, Orlando Hernandez and Livan Hernandez, who have become major league stars. In the tournament schedule announced last week, Cuba was to play its three first-round games in San Juan, Puerto Rico, facing Panama on March 8, the Netherlands on March 9 and Puerto Rico the following day. If the Cubans advanced, they would also have played their second-round games in Puerto Rico. "It is our policy that we do not confirm, deny or discuss licenses," Treasury spokeswoman Molly Millerwise said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "Generally speaking, the Cuba embargo prohibits entering into contracts in which Cuba or Cuban nationals have an interest." Rep. Jose Serrano, a New York Democrat, said Tuesday that he is circulating letters to be sent to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Treasury Secretary John Snow asking that Cuba be allowed to play. "Let's leave the politics out of this," Serrano said in a statement. "The World Baseball Classic should not be tainted by our grudge against Cuba's government. Cuba produces some of the finest baseball talent in the world and they deserve to participate." At last week's news conference in Dallas announcing tournament plans, Orza sounded nearly certain about OFAC granting a permit. "I do not think that is a serious impediment," Orza said, adding he was "very, very confident that the Cubans will play."

  13. What's worse is that Val is acting all blasé about it,but deep down in his nether regions this is killing him...
  14. Well he is Kenny Rogers right now so..........
  15. That would have been perfect, Val I'm surprised with you.
  16. Or "Mets get Ramirez".....
  17. Omar - " I'll go four years David(sloane) at $16 million" his reason for four years is that you have to give these guys a bigger incentive to come to Shea.
  18. Not a bad idea, would these years be guaranteed?
  19. Well yeah you would think that , Klap is probably his buddy..more from him in the same article. ] THIS AND THAT: The Mets and Manny (Part Three). According to a major league executive, the Mets made a strong effort to trade Kris Benson to the Rangers recently, hoping to acquire starter Juan Dominguez and outfielder Laynce Nix and then package them with Carlos Beltran in exchange for Manny Ramirez. The deal with Texas dissolved, however, and Ramirez is no longer considered a front-burner issue at Shea.
  20. Cool deal Wolf,we could buy them and make them our AAA franchise...on serious note most media companies make terrible owners.
  21. I agree with Dickshot, Bordick was a solid pick up at the time, didn't he hit a homer in his first AB?..
  22. From klapisch today.. ] NEWS ITEM: Yankees block Posada, Mussina and Johnson from World Baseball Classic. Given their druthers, George Steinbrenner would keep all his players in camp next spring while the WBC is underway. The Yankees see no upside to the tournament; instead The Boss is haunted by the possibility of injuries to his stars, which explains why the Yankees requested that Major League Baseball rule against all their players participating. Teams do have the right to request their players be removed from the rosters. And in three cases, the Yankees prevailed. As reported by the New York Post, Jorge Posada was taken off Puerto Rico's team, and it's since been learned that Mike Mussina and Randy Johnson are being kept off the U.S. squad. The Yankees made the same request for Mariano Rivera, Jeter and A-Rod, but were turned down by the commissioner's office. Rivera may decide to sit out the tournament on his own, having told friends Panama has so little chance of winning he doesn't see the value of leaving spring training. And just where, exactly, will A-Rod land? He's so torn trying to choose between the U.S. and Dominican Republic, the third baseman recently told the commissioner's office and players' association he'll abide by whatever decision they make. Since then, A-Rod has started leaning towards the Dominican squad, as he revealed to WFAN on Tuesday.
  23. I voted "other" but couldn't name any SS I hate...Kurt Abbott, Mike Bordick, Joe Mc...nah, as for Rey I admit when I first started following the Mets I loved Rey, I was amazed by what he could do with the glove, as time went on I became frustrated with his lack of skills with the bat...still he was one of the first Mets that was a fave so I like him....I've gotten over ripping the fans.
  24. Good work Edgy, I wonder about Davey Johnson, I'm sure he'd show but is he tight with the club these days?
  25. For people like me that go to a handful of games a season the ticket hike won't really matter, but for those that go to a lot of games this might hurt. ] Mets fans will see the average ticket price rise about 7 percent after busy, star-studded offseason BY KEN DAVIDOFF AND JON HEYMAN STAFF WRITERS The Mets have dominated the ever-popular "Hot Stove League," acquiring a trio of high-profile players. For fans who visit Shea Stadium next season, it figures to be more exciting on the field - and more expensive at the ticket window. The Mets are raising their ticket prices by an average of about 7 percent, Dave Howard, the team's executive vice president of business operations, told Newsday yesterday. Those with the higher-end seats will take the biggest added hit in the wallet. For instance, a fan who identified himself as Scott - worried about jeopardizing his relationship with the Mets, he declined to divulge his last name - told Newsday that his inner box seats were increasing as much as 25 percent, depending on the game. Scott, a 43-year-old accountant who has held season tickets since 1987, said that for his seats, the four games at the platinum level - Opening Day and three games against the Yankees - went up from $60 per seat to $75. The next level, gold, jumped from $55 to $65, followed by silver ($50 to $60), bronze ($45 to $55) and value ($40 to $45). Some fans were understanding of the price increase. "If they put a good product on the field, people will pay," said Mike Caliguri, 40, of Inwood, who was shopping at the New York Mets Clubhouse Shop at Roosevelt Field mall. "Die-hard Mets fans won't think twice. They just want to watch the game." "Given the success of the team and the demand of tickets, where we stand in the marketplace, we thought that certain adjustments were appropriate," Howard said. "There are some that are higher than others. In two categories, the location justified more substantial price." The Yankees announced late last month they were raising ticket prices for about 45 percent of the seats at Yankee Stadium for next season. The price of box seats closest to the field, which are only available as part of season-ticket plans, will go up by as much as $20. The seats, which include waiter service, will cost between $95 and $110 after selling for $90 last season. The most expensive ticket for any Mets game is $96, for the four platinum games at the "Metropolitan Club Gold" level, right by the dugouts. Factoring the different number of games per category, Howard said, the average price for that ticket is $74.59. The Mets have increased their prices without increasing their payroll while Mets general manager Omar Minaya retools the team this winter. The Mets' aggressive offseason is also a byproduct of their new partnership with SportsNet New York. The Mets' 2005 payroll was about $105 million. "We expect we're going to have a healthy payroll," Howard said. "Omar is not done yet ... We think our ticket prices are fair, relative to the product we're putting on the field." The team did drop the price of low-end bronze and value tickets. For the 42 games that qualify as bronze and value, tickets drop from $12 to $9. One fan tried to put the higher ticket prices in perspective. "I don't mind the increase," said Dan Quigley, 26, of Lynbrook, "as long as ticket prices stay lower than [47-year-old] Julio Franco's age." Chris Antonacci contributed to this story. The Mets will raise the average ticket price by 7 percent next year with the most expensive seats getting the biggest increase.
