  2. Triple Dee wrote: ="batmagadanleadoff"]If he can't get the job done, why should he pitch at all? Unless his job should be to come in at the top of the inning with an eight run lead. The state of play in the game (ie the lead) is not relevant to this statistic. Also, some closers have high inherited runners scored percentages, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't pitch at all. Call me crazy, but I'd rather have a pitcher who can get the job done. But maybe that's just me.

  6. Here's the Carter auction. Again, the front of the jersey looks OK. But the last name font doesn't, although I'm not 100% sure that the font is off. I could've easily researched this, but I didn't because I was only browsing. But there's not enough space between the nameplate and the uniform # on the back. The uniform #'s too high. The very top of the back side uni #s usually line up with the top of the armpit. That 8's too high. This has been a very bad week for Carter on this forum. http://tiny.cc/ckgrd
  7. There was recently, an auction for a Gary Carter Mets jersey from the same era that went for north of $400. I thought that that auction also had some issues. I'll try and dig that one up.
  8. Here's an ebay auction for an alleged David Cone road Mets jersey, supposedly signed by the pitcher himself. Because the jersey isn't a button down style, it has to be from 1988-1990. And Coney wore #44 in all of those years, not #17 as shown in the pictures. Also, the last name font looks off to me, (too chunky) as does the #7. Numbers also appear slightly shorter than those on real jerseys. Front of jersey looks OK. Maybe this was a crappy homemade attempt to convert a legitimate blank into a Cone jersey. Fraud Alert! http://tiny.cc/UJoJb P.S. Is this the right forum for this kind of post?
  9. *62 wrote: Kaz Matsui ...... MLB OBP ...... .325 He was Willie's #2 batter in 2005, whenever he was healthy, to be replaced by the equally crappy Miguel Cairo as Willie's other #2 hitter. But maybe this is fodder for that Pitchfork thread that's running simultaneously with this one.
  10. KC wrote: I approximated that Bud's OBP over his first four years was .260 and *62 said somewhere that Jose's was ~ .330. It's not equal, it's not even close. OK. I didn't verify anything. I saw the figures posted and assumed they were accurate. But yeah ... I see ... one OBP is career and another OBP is a first four years figure. Gotcha. Well, I'd still rather have Reyes hitting over Buddy in The Astrodome. Snicker.
  11. KC wrote: Also, who would you rather have up at bat on a carpeted Astrodome like field? Bud or Jose? Christ, Jose could have an inside the park homer at a joint like that every game. I'd rather have Reyes who overall is like Hank Friggin' Aaron compared to Harrelson, when you take power into account. But those OBP numbers are what they are. If his OBP is equal to Harrelson's, well that's a bad thing. Plus, when you adjust, Reyes loses out some more because a .327 OBP had more value in Buddy's day. I love rooting for Reyes, and I believe that at 24 years, there should be significant upside here. But there's also some truth to what 62 wrote about Reyes. In many ways, Reyes hasn't lived up to the hype. On the other hand, the notion that Reyes might be costing Randolph his job is a chicken-egg sort of argument. Maybe Randolph deserves some blame for letting Reyes bat leadoff every single day in 2005 even though all signs up to that point indicated that Reyes was clueless on all matters involving strike zone judgment. Back then, he was dead in the waters once he had two strikes against him. With two strikes, he was just as likely to strike out swinging on a 50 foot curve that needed two bounces to get to the catcher as on an eye-level fast ball.
  12. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Yup. And play in the Astrodome six games.... Actually, it was nine games prior to divisional play. And then, that would also include games at Forbes Field, another tough mother of a place to hit in.
  13. *62 wrote: Bud Harrelson ..... Career OBP of .327 Jose Reyes .............................. .328 http://www.baseball-reference.com/h/harrebu01.shtml And Bud had to face REAL pitching five days of five. Yup. And play in the Astrodome six games and a year, and a couple of other parks that are no longer here, having been replaced by even comfier stadiums that Reyes gets to hit in. Reyes' road games include Coors, The New Coors in Philly, and on and on, etc.

Nymr83 Apr 24 2008 08:55 PM i just flipped channels from 11 to 5 (for seinfeld at 11) and got to see the homerun off heilman twice in a row. fuck.
  19. Heilman gives up the homer to one of the first two batters he faces. Never saw that before. Heilman fans can say that he only gave up one earned run here.
  20. Mendoza Line wrote: ]You have drawn a mere four walks, stolen only three bases in five tries, scored only 12 runs. It's early to be projecting anything, but 12 runs in 19 games projects to 102 over 162. Not bad considering the weak production from the 2, 4, and 5 spots in the order so far. I agree with you about 19 games being too early. David Wright's April of last year was dreadful yet in the end he was the league's MVP IMO. But Reyes isn't having much of a season so far, for what it's worth. If he's projecting out to 102 runs scored, one could argue that he should be projecting to something higher than that number.
  21. AG/DC wrote: "Full Metal" deserves a poll. It's like two movies, and I'm not sure what to make of the second. I always liked Full Metal and rank it as one of my favorite Vietnam, if not all purpose War movies. It could easily make my top 10 list if my top 10 list were permitted to go to 20. MILD SPOILER ALERT COMING UP To me, the second half of Full Metal was a perfect metaphor for the senselessness of war. All of those American soldiers, and all the training they went through to get to where they were, all the resources assembled, human and machine, and for what? To commandeer a building already reduced to rubble before the soldiers even got there, and to eliminate what turned out to be just one sniper who perhaps was not even affiliated in an official sense, with the opposing forces. I write this post with the caveat that I do so only for the purpose of reviewing the Kubrick movie. I have no real opinion on whether Wars in general, or the Vietnam War specifically, were senseless, although I do suspect that there are people out there with concrete opinions on the matter. If I were forced to opine as to the senselessness of Wars, I would probably take the easy way out, and note that all Wars have some purpose and are also senseless in some other sense, and that some Wars, I would suppose, are more senseless than others. Or less senseless. Does this make any sense?
  22. KC wrote: Now that you've whetted our curiosity I hope that it's not about him not signing something for you twenty years ago or your wife knows the girl who used to give Gary his perm, or whatever. Whaddya, know me or something? As a matter of fact, I was good friends with the girl that used to give Gary his perm. The bastard would insist on paying her by the hair instead of by the job. He'd show up at the shop with his effin hair count, which he generated with the same fastidious accuracy that he would famously apply to the preparation of his tax returns. His tax returns were even honester than Felix Unger's. I'll give him that. And his hair count was always perfect, too. He was never off. Not even by a hair. And that was that. He'd pay by the hair. Of course he'd have less and less hair on the top of his head with each ensuing visit on account of him losing his hair and all, so she'd make less and less money on the next perm even though she was doing the same job. And when you accounted for inflation and the price of a movie ticket or that gooey gloopy stuff that she needed to do Carter's perm going up every coupl'a months, she was probably making even less money on him all the time. It got to the point where it was as if she was paying him to do his perm. That was his freakin' scam: less hair, less money. And plus on top of that, he used to force her to tell him all the time how he shoulda won the '86 MVP instead of Schmidt even though Schmidt had a better season and Carter probably wasn't even the best Met in 1986. Or the second best. He even had a script for her to read. He was kinky and all, even kinkier than the hairs that he was getting permed. '"You're the best, Gary". You're better than all of them. The best there ever was. Better than Schmidt. And Johnny Bench. Why they shoulda put you in the Hall of Fame right after the '86 season ended. And give you two plaques. One for the Mets and another for the Expos." she would have to tell him. She also hadda tell him that he had a better head of hair than Schmidt. And Hernandez. Definitely Hernandez. What a sicko!

You may have the honors.
  25. Here's my top 10 list off the top of my head, without giving this topic too much thought other than to alphabetize my picks. BTW, that Vic Sage had a nifty idea here, back when this thread was active during the Salty Parker era, about posting different top 10's every so often as a nod to the fact that a person's list changes often: City of God Duck Soup. I had to have a Marx Bros. pick in here and I'm not the first person with the idea that this one was their best ever. I can enjoy any Marx Bros. movie other than The Big Store and Room Service. A Night in Casablanca is my second favorite. I realize that NIC is considered one of their lesser movies but this list is personal and this one's a personal fave. Plus, NIC has some terrific Harpo bits including (baseball tie-in coming up) some clever business involving a catcher's mask and chest protector. A Face in the Crowd GoodFellas Midnight Cowboy The Purple Rose of Cairo I'm a big Woody Allen fan and this one's my personal fave, slighly edging out Hannah and Her Sisters and Stardust Memories. Purple Rose rarely makes critic's lists of top Woody movies. Psycho Much of the charm of this movie (yeah, I know - charm's a funny way to describe this one) involves the surprise plot twists and turns and unfortunately, this can only be enjoyed the first time around. I saw Psycho again recently and couldn't help but notice how far ahead of its' time the film was. Plus that bone-chilling Bernard Hermann musical score that I hear in the back of my head whenever the #2 guy in Willie's lineup crouches down to telegraph a freakin' sac bunt. Rosemary's Baby Saving Private Ryan Umberto D. When I made up this list, I had 13 films. The three that didn't make the cut: Requiem for a Dream. To be honest, I had forgotten about this one and was reminded of it by reading this thread, where several of you had mentioned it. When I first discovered Requiem, I must have seen it like half a dozen times in about two months. A powerfully depressing movie. Singin' in the Rain. Sixty years old and still watchable. I watch this movie about once every 10 months or so. Misses the cut because last month, I slipped the DVD into the player, and after 5 minutes, decided I had seen it too many times and shut off the DVD player. Maybe it'll make the next list. Treasure of Sierra Madre. Bogie's no gangster in my favorite Bogie movie. Not Really Applicable but I'm putting it in: I'm currently watching TV reruns of the old early 60's TV detective show Naked City on DVD. Almost every single exterior shot is filmed on location in NYC. Also, many of the interior shots are also filmed on location. So if a scene occurs in a grocery store, the director is is just as likely to have picked out an actual NYC grocery store to film the scene.
