  2. Maybe Manuel wanted a few more lefties in the lineup than usual. Easley's out, too. Volquez is virtually unhittable against righties this year and is striking out righties at a rate of better than one out of three batters.

  4. ="Benjamin Grimm"]I don't associate "11 Alive" with the Yankees in any way at all. During those years, I watched The Odd Couple and The Honeymooners on Channel 11. I never watched the Yankees. I guess we differ in that respect because I never watched the Yankees either but I still associate 11 Alive with the team. I'm a big Honeymooners and Odd Couple fan, too.
  5. Valadius wrote: I don't get it. 11 Alive was the WPIX Channel 11 logo/slogan/identity during the Joe Torre Mets manager era. WPIX televised Yankeee games back then. Here's a YouTube link to "11 Alive".
  6. AG/DC wrote: Oh, I left out SB. Feel free to guess that un. I'd go Larkin. I forgot the pitchers. It'd be truly Metsian if Seaver led in any of those pitching categories. But Seaver couldn't have pitched enough with the Reds to take any of those counting stats -- four and a half seasons including the strike-shortened '81. I'll take Maloney for every pitching stat except games -Bortbon, easy. I'll go ex-Met Myers for Saves.
  7. I'd give Rose all the good counting stats except for HR's and RBI's. I'd go with Bench for those other two. Rate stats? Beats me?

  9. TransMonk wrote: We should talk Ollie into a tattoo that says "Walks Kill". I think it'd be neat if a couple of Mets tatooed themselves with "Wee Willie Sucked".
  10. Ollie Perez is working on a full facial beard. I've been wondering if all this recent facial hair sprouting on the Mets isn't a silent shot at Wee Willie.
  11. Gary Cohen just segued from Reds HOF commentary to remind viewers that the Mets also have a HOF! Cohen wondered if many Met fans even know that this HOF exists and noted the trophy case on the Diamond Club level. (Sarcastically, I think, though in a matter of fact good natured voice). Cohen also commented that no Met has been inducted into its' HOF since 2002 and that the team hasn't had a meeting to induct a new Met "in years", perhaps implying no meetings at all since 2002. I think that Wilpon's waiting for someone to convince him to erect a pop art sculpture of the number 42 in centerfield. On the field. The sculpture would be in the Robert Indiana style. Like this: Maybe the sculpture could illuminate itself with flashing lights like a police car siren whenever a Met hits a Home Run. Or a Dodger. Whatever. Same thing.

  15. ="G-Fafif"]11 Alive debuted as WPIX's theme the same fall season "The Odd Couple" entered syndication. The was another 11 Alive in Atlanta around the same time...spooky! Fats Waller would commonly sell the rights to a song he created and then go across the hall and sell the same rights to the same song to another publisher. Maybe Fats wrote the 11 Alive theme.
  16. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I think of it as Odd Couple/Honeymooners territory. I dunno about this. 17. I like this thread title. I like the clever reference to an obscure and by now, scarcely remembered jingle. But wasn't "11 Alive" Yankee territory?
  18. Fernando Tatis is leading the Majors in OPS for the month of July.* (*Among players with 3.1 plate appearances for each game that their team has played this month.)
  19. Let's have some Metly fun and run this comparison over the last month of the season -- The Post-Willie era. Trot and Kathryn Nixon were at the Salt Shaker Bookstore on Saturday to sign copies of "The Spirit in Baseball," a children's book written by Kathryn.
