  1. May this commence to invalidate the "Lince-came, Lince-saw, Lince-conquered" headline brewing in my mind.

That's a good article where Piazza is concerned (thanks for the link), but I take issue with the author saying Bay has been "showered with boos" at Citi Field. I've witnessed a little impatience at times in the eight games I've attended this season, but not a shower of negative reaction. It's been barely a drizzle.
  3. I don't need a half-inning of Bobby Ojeda from the studio in the middle of a game, but as far as Met lefty starters who haven't won anything lately, I'd rather watch a half-inning of Bobby Ojeda than a half-inning of Ollie Perez.
  4. I'm not convinced Bay wasn't going to catch what Pagan caught in the third. Bay tends to make catches like a wide receiver, but Pagan got in the way of his route. What's caught is caught, thank goodness, but I wish they'd clear up their signals. It's the third time I can recall where it didn't look like anybody called I GOT IT!
  5. I just assume he'll go in as a god.
  6. Everybody takes the field in shin guards.
  7. Blanco 3.5 Santana 3.5 Takahashi 0.5 Pagan 0.5 Bay 0.5 Francoeur 0.5 Mejia 0.5 Rodriguez 0.5
  8. Cy Young vs. Cy Not? I'll take our chances with Ollie. Like I have a choice. Happy Birthday to all the mothers out there tomorrow. May the Mets present you with a broom.
  9. A game that felt several times like it was going to be horrible to lose became awesome to win. Was tempted, upon leaving, to stop by a tattoo parlor. Obviously all the greatest use their arms as canvases -- and cranes that lift awesome bats.
  10. Barajas 3.5 Davis 3.0 Pelfrey 2.0 Castillo 1.0 Bay 0.5
  11. Like the Pirates' fireworks guy has any idea what a Pirate home run looks like.
  12. What Ike makes the Giants look like:
  13. Two in a row, por favor...
  14. Roger Repoz Skip Jutze Skip Guinn Skip Lockwood (before the Mets got him) Clay Kirby Leron Lee Pete Broberg Tom Timmerman Craig Kusick (who is no longer with us, but whose 1975 card will never go away) Tom Tischinski Joe Grzenda Casey Cox Sonny Jackson Alan Gallagher (Dirty Al, for crissake) Paul Schaal Dave Chalk

There are lots of wire photos of people snapping photos as they walk past the casket, some shooting video. Seems to me that's at best disrespectful and at worst kinda creepy. Am I wrong? Kind of tacky, to say the least. I believe George Costanza did something similar to get a bereavement fare from an airline.
  16. In memory of the late Robin Roberts, all Citizens Bank Park tasers are being lowered to half voltage.
  17. Luke Walker Ty Cline Angel Mangual Billy Grabarkewitz Richie Scheinblum Larvell Blanks Celerino Sanchez Ray Oyler Doug Ault Paul Popovich
  18. I had no doubt what Ed Farmer did in the offseason.

(Bonus Plug-o-Rama: Josh will be the featured speaker at Amazin' Tuesday co-hosted by gfafif & me, May 18 at a NEW venue, Two Boots Grand Central (the LES location, sadly, is closing this week!) Anyway, I started it the other day and its more or less a chronological, more focused, retelling of the basic story you'd read at his website, as well written and meshed with the baseball cards as ever, I gotta give it 5 Pocorobas. How many Boccabellas?
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Somehow these POTM threads always end up being about baseball cards! Value added. Since David Wright wins most of the time anyway, somebody should ask him if he'd be kind enough to pose in period-correct uniforms against a green screen so he can be inserted into different years' cards. I bet he'd do it.
  21. The last year when I was really and truly carded up was '77, when I was 14 and the Blue Jay and Mariner issues lent a degree of fascination that had begun to wane here in '76. Hung in there with 'em on a less engaged scale through '81, my final year of high school, which feels appropriate in that that's when the Fleer and Donruss sets arrived and the whole thing began to feel diluted. Plenty of post-'81 cards scattered in these precincts (the ceremonial Buying of Four Packs still takes place every March just so I can still feel tangibly younger than Jamie Moyer) but it was never really the same after '81. Or '77. Or, more accurately, '75. All of this is to say, yeah.
  22. Robin Roberts was baseball coach where I went to college. I interviewed him once for a class assignment. He thought the team looked all right and didn't put down his sandwich. A little more on Coach Roberts here.
  23. Great work on the '78, BG. I liked that design 32 years ago even though what I associate it with mostly is the first Tom Seaver card where his cap is all messed up. As a fan of alternate reality Mets cards, I do hope you venture into 1979 just for completion's sake. But no complaints seeing the old faves and the new sensation here.
