  1. R.A. Dickey needs to pitch 1.2 more innings to ensure he will be eligible to be listed among the ERA leaders for 2010. He is currently 10th, 0.01 ahead of Cole Hamels, 0.06 ahead of Clayton Kershaw and 0.02 behind Roy Oswalt. We miss Oswalt but it's Dickey vs. Hamels Saturday with Craig Swan Award implications.
  2. Was that "For Mets Fans Only"? I never read it but leafed through it once.
  3. Thursday night, 6:30, it's Mets Yearbook: 1967. I hear they have a rookie of note and hire a new manager toward the end.
  4. Prevention & Recovery claims another victim.
  5. There go the 79-72 men in black. No galaxy left to defend on the South Side of Chicago or in the American League Central. Congratulations Twinkies. Don't lose to the MFYs. Again.
  6. The 73-78 Dodgers join the Mets in something other than having provided a cap of some sort for Rod Barajas in 2010. However you color it, the Dodgers is dead.
  7. The star is open on one side so all hope can flow out for the 73-78 Astros.
  8. Edgy DC wrote: And I feel there's no reason that a person who can operate a Rush cover band can't operate a ball team. Today's Tom Seaver, he gets high on you.

  10. 74-77 and appropriately draped in black.
  11. First three innings took a shade over 40 minutes. 1919 Giants and Phillies appear safe. But they didn't have commercial breaks.
  12. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Total autonomy! Great name for a Rush cover band.
  13. Wayne Hagin notes Miami Vice was one of his favorite shows of the '80s.
  14. Typical Mets. Howie reporting it now, and seems offended "word travels immediately these days."
  15. Torre, in his best Emily Litella, says Never Mind! (Via L.A. Times's Dylan Hernandez). "I had no intention of making people believe I wanted to manage the Mets." "I'm closing the door on managing the Mets -- and probably everybody else."
  16. Watch out 1919 Giants and Phillies! ]
  17. That first half-inning could not have taken more than 120 seconds.
  18. Manuel on Torre's "oh yeah, I'd totally take that guy's job" comments Monday: Manuel says he thinks its curious when a person comments about a filled position. When asked if he felt Torres comments were disrespectful because Manuel currently holds the job, Manuel replied, Sure, no question. Torre pissed me off with that. So did Pelfrey in Sunday's News: Mike Pelfrey stressed several times, "We already have a manager" and added that he didn't want "to stir it up." But he, just like any Met fan, has heard the speculation about Joe Torre perhaps being the Mets' future manager, which gained steamed Friday when Torre announced he'd step down as the Dodgers' skipper after the season. Asked for his reaction to the chatter, Pelfrey prefaced his remarks Saturday by saying, "I don't know if I want to comment. I don't want to offend anybody, so I don't want to say anything. "But I think if the organization decides they want to go in a different direction, it'd be kind of cool to have Joe Torre if you could bring him in here. But we have a manager. I think, of course, we haven't played up to expectations and we haven't been as good as we should've been, so if they decide at the end of the year they need to make a move, it'd be fine to have Joe Torre. "I guess we'll see how it shakes out. But he's obviously an icon, so it'd be cool if he was here - if they decide to go in that direction." Just go with, "The Mets have a manager," and wait two weeks until they don't.
  19. I swear Howie just paused to think of what the name of Sun Life Stadium is this week.

  22. Don't know if you can read what it says, but I took a magnifying glass and made it out: Fuck you, Mantle. I'm huge, you're tiny. You're dead. I'm more recently alive. Yeah, just stand there off my right shoulder with your inconsequential 536 home runs. Have another belt, you putz. You call that a monument? My grandchildren play with bigger blocks. They play with Park Avenue. What's that? Old joke? You're the old joke, Mantle. I could buy and sell you if I wasn't dead. Same goes for the rest of you stiffs. Stengel over there -- what are you laughing at? I bought you those players you won with. You think it was Dan Topping and Del Webb? When I bought this sorry-ass team, I bought the rights to everything that had been done before. I'm the one who signed Moose Skowron, for fuck's sake. That's how big I am; I bag moose. Now where's that Pope plaque? I got a few things to tell him about my accommodations. Upgrade me to a suite for fuck's sake and then don't tell everybody how secretly wonderful I am.
  23. Your Milwaukee Brewers: 69 wins, 79 losses and no travel plans beyond the end of the season. They can drink all they want. They're not going anywhere.
