  1. Obama laid a wreath today. May Pelfrey not lay an egg.

  3. Benjamin Grimm wrote: The record for fewest letters in a starting Mets infield is... 18! Set by Davis-Hu-Wright-Reyes on April 9, 2011. The previous record was 19, set by Hodges-Hunt-Neal-Moran four times in 1963, and tied by Cook-Hunt-Kanehl-Moran that same year, and by Smith-Samuel-Hunt-Moran in 1964. We saw some 20's in 2010, with Davis-Cora-Wright-Reyes. The lengthiest-named starting infield? 36 letters, on July 11 and July 19, 1971. Clendenon-Martinez-Aspromonte-Harrelson. Thank you for the confirmation. I was at that April 9 game and didn't recognize the Hustory in the making.

The bunt taketh away, and the bunt giveth, or something. ...helping matters by going back to the clubhouse while the ball was in play. My theory is that, when you've already emasculated a guy with the bunt sign, actually trying to achive seems counterintutitive to him. Also, I think he broke a heel.
  5. Sanchez bunts into the 2-6-3, helping matters by going back to the clubhouse while the ball was in play.
  6. Hu not in there for his defense. You can't spell Murphy without Hu.
  7. Miguel Tejada: Saving his legs for the next time somebody bothers to triple him home.
  8. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: "Now that is a man with bat control. I salute you, noble dancing one." Look at that beard -- what a douche.
  9. Two. Run. TRIPLE! Hope Pelf's legs aren't gone.
  10. Pelfrey's strike zone proves too large a target for Sanchez. First and second.
  11. Slow grounders can be the means of production.
  12. Hairston walks and after a moment of scratching his head in confusion, heads to first.
  13. Hairston a day game animal. Let 'em roar.
  14. Run-scoring grounder to third turns into DP but the key here is run-scoring. Good for Ronny.
  15. And Cody can't get to Davis's hit. Shucks to be him again. First and third...
  16. Ross dives, grabs Bay's sinking liner and can't hold on. Shucks for him. Yay for Bay.
  17. Pelfrey pitching to Paulino. Nuthin' but a P thang, baby.
  18. Get Bay, Pagan, Duda, Thole and Gee in the same lineup and you've got optimal efficiency. Or save on letters.
  19. Edgy DC wrote: I can imagine a 1970 infieled of 18 letters with Foy/Weis/Foli/Shamsky. I don't know if that ever happened but there's a good chance it did. I do know Cleon Jones didn't play any first that season, which would have given them a chance at 16. Never happened. Weis and Foli not in the same lineup.
  20. Left to right: Wright, Reyes, Hu, Davis. That's 18 letters total for the infield. Have the Mets ever used fewer to start a game?
  21. Nice profile on the actual guy behind the beard in SI over the winter here. Nearly three months later Wilson hasn't come off his Series high. "You know what it's like?" he says, theatrically stroking the beard. "You're 12 years old. Everything is great. It's Friday. The school bell just rang. You have no responsibilities. You get to have a sleepover. All you want to do is jump up and down and scream. You know that feeling? Now make it times a billion. That's winning the World Series."
  22. Paul Lukas's Uni Watch column explores non-ring championship bling. One item featured among the belt buckles, tie clips and digital watches is a World Series pendant given by Bill Shea to each Met wife; Mrs. Ron Taylor's pictured here. Bill didn't own a piece of the team or the stadium. But he sure liked the Mets. (Or their wives.)
  23. Fella next to me Tuesday night told me he likes to predict the score ahead of time. He had it Mets 5 Giants 3. He was off completely. But I admired that he came up with the score first and then decided it would be the Mets winning.
