  1. I'd like to hear what Billy Wagner thinks.
  2. Shortstops of the recent past update cont'd: Quintanilla drives in two in Orioles' life-affirming demolition of MFYs. Reyes hitting streak up to 18.
  3. Harvey 3.5 Turner 1.0 Hairston 1.0 Byrdak 0.5
  4. I always think of Casey McGehee when the Mets play the Brewers. I just block him out when they play the Pirates.
  5. They are getting Casey McGehee for Chad Qualls. I'll just go ahead and say I hate Casey McGehee after not having thought of him since the last time we played Milwaukee.
  6. Dempster to Texas. MFYs announce thawing of cryogenically frozen Ewell "The Whip" Blackwell for fifth-starter role.
  7. Don't worry, MFYs are reportedly moving in on Dempster.
  8. News from around infields: Orioles starting 2B Omar Quintanilla goes 1-for-2 vs. MFYs, draws two-out walk that instigates crucial two-run, seventh-inning rally in 5-4 Baltimore win. Two more doubles for Marlins No. 3 hitter Jose Reyes, lifting his hitting streak to 17 games (.343/.389/.627) and overall slashes to .277/.344/.419. Giant SS Joaquin Arias 1-for-2, 3B Marco Scutaro 2-for-4 in ten-inning loss to New York Mets. (While SF CF Angel Pagan punches something in the dugout and has to come out of the game because he punched something in the dugout.)
  9. METS ALL-TIME HIT LEADERS Through Games of 7/30/2012 1. Ed Kranepool 1,418 2. DAVID WRIGHT 1,370 COUNTDOWN: Krane Minus 48 2012 GAMES REMAINING: 59
  10. Hairston 4.0 Edgin 1.5 Hefner 1.5 Bay 0.5 Baxter 0.5 Johnson 0.5 Valdespin 0.5 Rauch 0.5 Byrdak 0.5
  11. Jose Reyes, the Marlins' No. 3 hitter since the departure of Hanley Ramirez, is riding a 16-game hitting streak since the All-Star break. In the 70 games that started with the Mets visiting Miami, Jose (who hasn't missed any of them) is batting .293/.354/.452.
  12. Adam Rubin noticed: Brandon Nimmo went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs in Brooklyn's 10-5 victory against Mahoning. 23 RBI in 150 AB.
  13. METS ALL-TIME HIT LEADERS Through Games of 7/29/2012 1. Ed Kranepool 1,418 2. DAVID WRIGHT 1,369 COUNTDOWN: Krane Minus 49 2012 GAMES REMAINING: 60

  15. Tom Paciorek shows up in this SI profile of the mind-boggling one-game career his brother John had against the Mets in 1963. But what John Paciorek accomplished as an 18-year-old on Sept. 29, 1963, was not just remarkable; it was also historic. In his first game in the major leagues, playing rightfield for the Houston Colt .45s (now the Astros), Paciorek went to bat five times and reached base every time, on three hits and two walks, scored four runs and drove in three more. It was one of the finest first games by a ballplayer in major league history. Then, like the ghostly form of Moonlight Graham, an outfielder who played a half inning in the field without an at bat for the 1905 New York Giants and whose fictionalized version haunts Field of Dreams, Paciorek simply vanished into the endless cornfield of forgotten ballplayers. Some kinda scoresheet, too. Note all those promising Colt rookies making the 1963 Mets miserable on their way out the door. It was no accident, as Ted Keith reports. The San Bernadino Sun is on the Paciorek case, too.

  19. Mets crush Cubs, 17-1, June 27, 2012. I'd want to relive it, too.
  20. Going back in time to the heady days of June 27, are we? Ruben Tejada - SS Jordany Valdespin - RF David Wright - 3B Ike Davis - 1B Daniel Murphy - 2B Jason Bay - LF Josh Thole - C Andres Torres - CF Jonathon Niese - LHP
  21. Collins suggested yesterday on the FAN that Duda will play first in Buffalo only as a last resort of him sucking irredeemably in RF and LF, where he'll be stationed exclusively at first. The goal is to get him comfortable enough defensively in the OF so that he doesn't take his defense with him to the plate and get back to being a dangerous hitter. The organization knows he's all right with the confidence (or CAHNfidence) at first, so, per Collins, it sees no point in giving him time there, since he's not likely to be playing any first in the majors, given Ike's apparently satisfying presence in the Met scheme of things. Or so they say until minds are changed if and when balls are dropped.
  22. Courtesy of the Islanders, a look at Howie Rose doing what he does when the ice is in storage.
  23. Braves signing Miguel Batista, per David Lennon.
  24. That's four transcendent pitching performances in one year -- the no-no, the R.A. one-one's and now the welcome Matt. Pretty good for a 48-51 outfit.
  25. Harvey 4.5 Edgin 1.5 Hairston 1.5 Torres 1.5 Byrdak 0.5 Tejada 0.5
