  1. 81-81 Phillies lose last game, finish with first non-winning record in 10 years.
  2. Pirates. Royals. Astros. Mets. Only four teams to not win as many as 80 games in any of the past four seasons.
  3. Something about these availabilities reminds me of an SNL bit from the Gulf War wherein reporters at an official briefing asked military brass questions like, "Can you give us an idea of when you plan to move troops in and what their targets would be?"
  4. Frayed Knot wrote: A corner OFer in the 21st century looking to match the BA from the backup SS set during the most hitting-depleted season since the dead-ball era is a rather low bar indeed. And I'm confident Bay can't clear it. Not won't, but can't.
  5. The Mets, as some of you probably have noticed in your lives, win more under certain prevailing political circumstances than others. Since the Mets began play in 1962, Democrats have held the presidency for 23 yearsand the Mets have had losing seasons in 19 of them. Conversely, in the 28 years in which a Republican has been president, the Mets have had 19 winning seasons. This should not be construed as an endorsement of those circumstances, but there is a story about in the Wall Street Journal today and I'm quoted apolitically in it. Greg Prince, who cowrites the Mets-fan blog Faith and Fear in Flushing, said he has "absolutely no idea" what the trend means. When it comes to the Mets, "there are no red states and no blue states," he said. "For us, there is only the orange-and-blue state." Prince also noted that the Mets "actually did very well during the Johnson administration and were never better than when Carter's toothy grin was a sight familiar to all Americans." Of course, he means former Mets manager Davey Johnson and catcher Gary Carter, who led the Mets to their last World Series title in 1986when Republican Ronald Reagan was president.
  6. If Jason Bay somehow rustles up two or three at-bats and gets at least two hits, he will NOT have the lowest season batting average of any Met ever to garner 200 plate appearances. But judging by this lineup, I think Al Weis's 1968 can rest easy.
  7. 74-88, with alternating dollops of Pollyannish BS when they play well and overwrought doom and gloom when they don't filling the Metscape That was me when asked in another thread what the Mets' record would be in 2012. The Mets are 73-88. There was plenty of Pollyannish BS when they played well. There was plenty of overwrought doom and gloom when they didn't. I'll go out on a limb and make one more prediction: there will be no more games after today. So, Mets, win the one that's left and make me look more prescient than I could possibly be in real life. Or as the lady in those anti-Bloomberg soda radio ads put it with clipped enthusiasm, C'mon...Mets.
  8. Pitching with one ab tied behind his back...or something like that...he wins 20 games and contends strongly for the Cy Young. Really Amazin'.

  14. Around 0:24, there is evidence that in the digital future or whenever this takes place, the Mets have retired a bundle of numbers or made the playoffs a few more times. Check beyond the OF wall.
  15. Look for one at-bat from Adam Greenberg on Tuesday.

  17. Bart to Homer: But you love New York, now that your least favorite buildings have been obliterated: old Penn Station and Shea Stadium! Homers fist-shaking reply: Lousy outdated relics..." --Season premiere of 2012-13 (24th season), Moonshine River, The Simpsons, 9/30/2012

  19. And who is this "Alfonso" of whom you speak?
  20. In the new CBS Sherlock Holmes series Elementary, Lucy Liu is Joan Watson, Mets fan. New York magazine is on the case. I just saw the pilot, which ends with your character watching the Mets as they lose. Was that an homage to your growing up in Queens? [Laughs] I actually love the Mets and the Yankees and I think they originally had the Yankees in there. But the Yankees did not want to portray themselves, obviously, as a losing team. But I think the Mets were open to it and thats how we ended up doing it. [laughs]

  24. Thursday, 7:30 -- Mets Yearbook: 1987, a.k.a. At the Ballpark with Frank Cashen and Keith Hernandez (as Siskel and Ebert, or so I'm told). This leaves the unaired eps down to one, 1986, which if it airs, will be gutted to avoid musical licensing fees. (It can be watched here.)
  25. For the record, hit No. 3,000 came the next day in the same series, not in the same game, a double that made Kranepool's presence in the photo so vexing (Eddie playing first at night which was at odds with Roberto doubling in daytime). Forty years later, Eddie's Met hit record is broken on, let's face it, a very generous hometown call, something Roberto didn't get.
